The chances of this happening?

The South China Sea is going to be an issue in the foreseable future. If we engaged China in war I could just imagine what that would do to our economy. Although we are still superior militarily to China, the gap is somewhat closing. I doubt that it would be easy and would cost many American lives. The Chinese would pay a huge price as well. In the end, the world economy would probably go into a tailspin.

Fifteen percent.

Does anyone remember the Hainan Island incident early in Bush's first term? Among common people in China there is a fanatical nationalism which IMO is second only to Muslim fanaticism.

Logically, it makes no sense at all for war to occur between the two. But all it takes is one hot-headed Chinese to screw things up. And there are a lot of Chinese and a lot are hot-headed.

I am ok with this so long as Hollywood creates a movie after WW3 is over that depicts Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron as American war heroes bravely killing Chinese soldiers, with additional scenes of Scarlett Johansson posing ridiculously before doing so.

China can't force project to Taiwan let alone a global war with us. They have the numbers, but with air superiority we can contain those numbers fairly easily.

I would be more worried about who they pull in as allies and where the other fronts would form.

Yes, and Trump is an impulsive idiot. But Xi has himself been leaning more on nationalism. People get complacent in times of relative peace, arrogant.

They wouldn't be able to pull any allies.

The biggest problem would be the aftermath of such a war. Assuming the USA prevailed, and it probably could win, there would likely be a requirement to do a regime change in China...affecting all 1.2 billion people. Talk about a headache.

And China has undergone a sharp rise in defense spending despite there being a relative lack of pending threats. They recently got their first aircraft carrier and they plan on having 6-7 in the coming decades.

I've been saying this for some time: China wants a war.

I don't think many Westerners understand the level of cultural butthurt many Chinese carry with them wrt the West, and how it colors their perceptions and choices on the international stage. Yes this involves fisheries, and probably plans for Taiwan, but it involves face to an even greater extent. Beijing has groomed this sentiment to one day be useful, and I think use it is exactly what they are going to do.

And now, instead of having to deal with the charismatic and cool Obama, Xi gets to use the pugnacious and belligerent Trump to help sell it to the unbelievers who remember the last time China went to war over face.

I'm hoping for the Reagan effect, the 'Let's not fuck with this guy. He's clearly nuts.' that got to the Russians.

Actually, could you give examples and links? I've definitely seen lots of Chinese theoreticals on war...pretty disturbing. I'm not sure if I'd go so far as saying the Chinese want war. I think for them a lot of it is doing intellectual exercises.

Why not throw out even more broad brushes, generalizations, stereotypes, and other bullshit.

Logically, it makes no sense for Putin to ditch China to join some magical white-supremacist alliance against the world with Trump and his fanatical cultists who spend the day hallucinating and speaking in tongues.

Im sure quite a few Chinese want a war, but that doesnt mean Beijing wants a war.

They prefer conquering the world by a thousand cuts.

Huh? Putin?

Stereotypes exist for a reason.

In this thread: americans who lack the basic self-awareness that they've been the ones starting all the actual wars now for quite some time.

It wouldn't be a Republican presidency without a new war or two tossed in for the military complex. "We need to rebuild the military!". McCain is already excited.

Is it really? I don't think it's as close as you might think. And of course a war between us and China would cost many American and Chinese lives. The outcome would be horrific and both the US and the Chinese know this.

Also hasn't China been pushing more and more into international water by building faux islands and then putting army bases on them? Anyway, the last paragraph of the article mentioned that military might may not be needed but an economic action could be taken instead. So I guess we will wait and see what President Trump and his advisers decide is the best course of action.

The South China Sea is going to be an issue in the foreseeable future. If we engaged China in war I could just imagine what that would do to our economy. In my opinion, not in the slightest.

You really can't compare the two navies. The PLAN is a limited regional power, while we all know the US Navy is the largest, most experienced, and most capable navy floating around our plastic filled waters. A few things would happen:

1. Militarily, China is no match for the US, and I don't say that to beat my chest. It's just the raw truth. In combination with the US Air Force, it would not take long to silence the PLAN. The US would not need to land any major ground force to win this war whatsoever.
2. Economically, China is an export country. With a blockade in place, there would be an immediate Chinese economic crunch. Both parties would be hurt, but China would be hurt a lot, lot more.
3. Socially, China has a lot to risk from a potentially devastating war.

So in conclusion, I do not believe China would do anything to risk war with the US Navy. I do believe they have been testing the waters (no pun intended) to see where the "red line" is, but a frontal engagement with such a force would throw the PLAN 30+ years into the past. It takes many decades to build a blue water capable navy like that of the US, and ours was fast tracked because we had to. Until China can rival the US militarily, you won't see them stand their ground. They have way too much to lose to simply throw it all away.

There are more people in China to die. Just a few attacks on their infra-structure and starvation and disease will overtake them quickly. We will sink their fishing fleet, destroy their Harbors, blow up their factories, and bomb their offensive Coal Fired Power Plants.

A war with China Might be tough, but we know where their high speed long range missiles are located. It would be a messy and costly war, but how well will communists fight for their country? Parts of China Might even revolt.

Just one Ohio class submarine can wipe out much of China with ICBM's from a thousand miles away.

Trump doesn't have the political capital for a war with China over some islands in their backyard that Americans can't even locate on a map.

Far as I'm concerned the South China Sea (SCS) is a regional problem, and those countries should deal with it on their own terms.
If those terms include using us... then we'd better extort one HELL of a value in return.
