Possible to build a computer ~800Mhz or so with $50-$75?

My school came up to me today...they tell me to do whatever necesary to get one of the pentium 2 computers fixed (burnt out vid card)...i'm wondering if i can built a system maybe using one of those Sis processors that they had here earlier for like $20 after MIR....the school gave me a budget of $75

If its just a burned out vid, why not just get a new vid?

RUns on pc66 ram? You can probably grab another board with an older 1ghz cpu in for/sale that has integrated video for that much. Then resuse components from the other system.

Damn man, what school do you go to? My school just bought about 50 new 2.8g dells with 18" flatscreens...

The better question is what the hell school do you go to? My college doesn't have computers like that. I think there's one EE lab with P4's.

🙁

our computer lab has the "new and improved fast" pentium 2's that are TWICE as fast as our previous 133MHz pc's from last year...they installed Win2k on them and called them new :brokenheart:

I'm trying to convince my school to get some REAL FRIGGIN COMPUTERS!!!!!

I've gotten them to stop using Windows 2000/ Pentium2 gateway as their centralized server....Told them to upgrade to an opteron solution with something like Win2k3 SBS Server....they listened to my server os part, but bought xeon instead "We haven't heard much about AMD...Intel is much better than anything"

Now some wiseass ripped the monitor out of the card, or so i'm told, and the monitor doesn't work anymore, and there's a blown capacitor on the Vid card. The computer is a ~166MHz computer running Win2k

This gives me at least an excuse to upgrade, i can tell them the computer is dead and they won't know the difference. We have absolutely no IT Department, and the computer teacher is currently teaching students how to install Windows 98 in the "Computer Science" Elective

Same, except they arn't dells.

Pretty sad for a school in the US.

Offer to pay shipping for P2/P3 parts in the FS/T forum. Lots of us have junk parts gathering dust that are at least as good as that P2.

Just get a new video card

If the new one is better than the rest, kids will argue over it at that age

Don't try and change too much, they will do their best with the budget they are given

my old hs's computer lab were had really old computer, where the monitors, computer and keyboard is one big unit. the only computer class offered was touch typing =\

We (the EEs/CEs/SEs) just got a new building last year. The money they spent on computers must've been insane, from what I've heard there are ~500 computers in the building all of which they bought 18" LCDs. Of the 500 computers, I'd say at least 200-300 were 2.6GHz P4 Gateways. It must have cost them a fortune, but it's probably not that much compared to the cost of the building itself.

Meanwhile we get to enjoy the 18" LCDs whenever we need to use a computer 😀

college?

Mine has a HUGE lab with a bunch of 3GHz P4's with 512MB RAM and 20" flatscreens...plus a few with 1GB RAM and DVD burners, and a bunch of dual 2GHz G5 powermacs with 1 GB RAM.

Mind you, this is a pretty big school...
