Man, what type of fool goes off the fifth floor, there has got to be a high place than that. The dude at my school who went was at least smart enough to fall 12 stories onto pavement and end it quickly.

BUT there are very few situations where it is acceptable. be a man and deal with the problems. instead he ran from them and hurt his friends, family etc.

Do you honestly think that someone willing to jump out of a building to end their life would be able to rationalize their problem and "deal with it"?

Indeed. Mental illnesses are rather unique in how they work. Your rational perception itself is skewed by the illness, whatever its causes. With a physical illness, such as from a bacteria, you have an "unbiased" observer which is able to perceive the infection and deal with it: your immune system.
The mind has only itself to act as an immune system against problems. If the problems alter the minds perception of said problems, it compromises the ability to cope rationally, in some cases without the person even being aware of the distinct lack of rational judgement. It's a sort of disease which is able to convince the infected party that it's not actually infected.

This can cause a sort of feedback loop, where the distressed person can quite literally see no way out of their problems. It can start to feel like being a caged animal, and the bars of the cage are not only electrified, but they continue to close in, with no end in sight, save one - the ultimate end. Suicide isn't so much a "solution" as it is an escape, a way of stopping sufferring.

Concerning how it hurts friends and family, someone in such a situation might even think that they're doing family members a favor, by ridding them of such a distressed person.

Being in a chronically depressed state isn't a fun, or especially rational, place to be. Trying to make rational sense out of it from a third-person view doesn't always make sense, as you are an impartial observer. In that person's mind, their own mind IS the only observer they're aware of, and that observer's perceptions are biased.

Suicide is just in general a most unfortunate means of dealing with problems. It ends the sufferring of one, but causes sufferring in others. That being the case, if the person only knew that it truly isn't the idea solution, if they knew how much they are cared for by others, suicide would seem like less of a viable option. Mental illnesses are unique in one sense though - to be cured, the person with it must actively decide to accept a cure. It cannot be forced upon them.

Cornell has a ridiculously high suicide rate... plus they have lots of opportunities for suicide (lots of cliffs)

I would also just like to thank all the insensitive heartless people for trolling the thread. Yea it happens at colleges, and yea we think it is stupid to have done such a thing, but the kid is now dead-- at least you can respect him now instead of bashing him.

-Kevin

Why the hell should we respect him?

Perhaps you meant that we should have some respect for him because he's dead? I have a hard time getting worked up over someone who does something so selfish and shortsighted.

That is exactly why there shouldn't be bars on the windows. If you're stupid enough to lean out the window or do anything to facilitate falling out of one, I don't want you to be the future of my country.

I wonder why it hasn't been all over the news. Virgina Tech Massacre 2: When Good Windows Go Bad.

Honestly, who cares?

Unless you knew the guy, this should not affect your life in any way.

Why is it that this even makes a post? Sure, it's sad somebody's family has to deal with their solution, but this isn't thread worthy. If we had a thread for every suicide the whole board would be filled with them. Sorry, but not a big deal.

Well originally we thought there was a larger problem here at Tech--which was the last thing we needed here. Additionally, Tech does not have a high suicide rate at all and it is rare when it happens here.

Seriously- being a Lifer, don't you think that comment is a little inappropriate given the circumstances!?

kids kill themselves at college all the time. don't worry, the national news will not be concerned about this event--don't you think it kinda belittles what happened last year to treat this as a tragedy?

besides, just be glad you're not a student at University of Chicago. those dweebs off themselves on a weekly basis.

sometimes surviving sucks. my freshman year, a dude jumped off the 12 floor, landed on his knees...and lived.

UPDATE: the police have ruled it a suicide... Link

I saw the story on the front page of the CT when I walked to class this afternoon. This has happened a few times in the past few years, it sucks now that anytime something like this happens, it instantly becomes news because of what happened in April.
