One of my friends sent this to me and I felt it was worth passing on to you. I always use Chevon so I guess I am doing my part......:)

Subject: Gas Prices

Dear friends & family,

I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "Don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.77 for regular unleaded gas in Riverwoods, IL. We all know that we're being screwed by the oil companies. Does everyone remember how they drove up the prices way past a dollar and got the gas prices to where they wanted them, claiming there was a shortage of oil. Well, there isn't any shortage now, and the oil is more abundant than it was 35 years ago when the price of a gallon of gas was 29 cents!!!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace.... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I'm sending this note to at least thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am... so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you I didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 OR LESS RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK!!!!!!!

PLEASE take a few minutes and pass this on to everyone you know!! If you can't e-mail it to at least ten people, please print out a bunch of copies and hand it out to your family and friends!!

NO MORE MOBIL & EXXON FOR ME!!!!
:)

Thats a pretty good idea, but getting mass amounts of people to cooperate is easier said then done.

BURN this idea, stupidest thing ever. By making the oil company lose money (an insignificant amount, btw) we expect them to *lower* prices? Get real, that idea is trash.

Stupid chain letter :|

Haha, yikes. Isn't it fairly obvious that we're going to buy gas no matter how expensive it is?

Please search for my topic from last month letting people know that George Bush isn't the cause of all that is wrong in the world. I'm neutral as far as he goes but know better than to blame him for everything. That's just ignorant.

yeah, political instability in venezuela has NOTHING to do with current gasoline prices in the united states... it is ALL just gouging by the oil companies!

do you have ANY idea why gas prices are going up??

The reason WHY gas prices WILL hit $3 this summer is because of the closing of refineries in CA... its not because of a shortage of gas, but gas needs to be REFINED before u can put it in your car..

CA is the state with the strictest emission laws, so gas produced in the refineries in CA must adhere to strict limits, which is harder to accomplish and also more expensive. Refineries are currently closing in CA simply because they are inefficient, less refineries -> less gas for your car -> higher prices, simple econ 101

another major factor is because 2 (or is it 3) other states are JOINING CA to have a strict emission law, thus demand for "less polluting" gas will INCREASE. Increase in demand combined with less supply means HUGE price increases..

The only feasible way of combating gas price increase is if one of the folllowing happens:
- since gas will be at $3, refineries will reopen because they might get more cost effective
- people will scream at gas prices, AHNOLD (and other politicians) might possibly reduce the emission requirement. If the laws ARE changed, the change will not show immediately..
- gas prices are one of the highest taxed items in the country... the cost of producing gas is only miniscule compared to the added taxes (I dont know how much exactly, maybe in the territory of 20%?)... if government reduce the taxes on gas people might see immediate relief...
- people willl change their habit, stop buying SUVs, hummers, etc... commute less and rethink the way the life... I believe this is what will happen. Auto makers will push hybrid (and other type of non gas vehicles) into the market. Hybrid vehicles will fall down in price simply because it will be more economical to buy and to produce it.

No. It won't. The logic behind this is fundamentally flawed. The whole reason behind prices creeping up is the old law of supply and demand. Extremely few refineries have opened (actually, I think more have closed than opened) in North America since the early 80s, however, our demand for fuel has gasoling has increased. It has finally reached the point where prices are being largely determined because of demand of gasoline catching up to supply... not the usual past reasons of crude prices.

Boycotting will not help this. Only building more refineries and the lowering of crude prices. It's better for a company to not sell fuel than sell it at a loss. That's why gas wars are usually over so fast and even then not ever gas station in the area take part in them.
