porsche, the eternal sports car?

My hands were shaking after I drove a 996 911 once and can't even begin to describe the experience, this will probably just be even more insanely amazing.

when i drove one, my hands weren't shaking, but i did have dreams about it for a week!

The 911 will always be behind others in terms of perforamnce, hanging a large weight off the rear axle makes for horrible weight distrbution and un-predcitable handing. When it is time to drive, the 911 should stay in the garage

you have lots of experience with them?

everyone who does seems to think that porsche figured out how to make the rear-engine layout work years ago.

How much track time have you spent with different 911s? Which cars have you tested that you consider better?

Sounds like you picked up that bit off some car forum...

My friend owns a 2007 911 Turbo and it's the single greatest car I've ever driven. I've never heard of it having "unpredictable" handling, in fact all I've ever heard from the car enthusiasts that I know is that the car has great handling, and tends to fishtail if you drive it too hard through corners rather than roll over. Don't ask me though, I'm no expert on driving cars.

I get to drive all current Porsche models every day 😀
I am a hardcore Corvette enthusiast, but you have to give credit where credit is due, they are awesome machines to drive and to look at.

How much Draino have you ingested today? It wasn't enough 😕
This is pure and utter BS. They have the R/R layout refined to a T. It is extremely predictable if you are a true driver, rather than someone who simply inputs throttle and steering requests and nothing else.

I'm not sure on the exact quote, it was something along the lines of:
The Porsche 911, a flawed design executed flawlessly.

That was my impression of how they stack up against other performance cars, although I do happen to think they are beautiful.

No, I've driven the mother of all sports cars and it is the Lotus Elise. It's a true drivers car and does everything the 911 does but for half the price. Oh, and I've driven the 911...not recently, but I have driven them.

You wouldn't say that if you drove a Lotus Exige Sport. 😀

Also the 911 can be a daily driver, I am not disagreeing with you I love Lotus's, but the 911 is much better all around.

Yeah, that's true. 😉 I'd buy an Exige if the wife weren't so smitten with the top off version of that car. I'm seriously looking at getting one of these in the next year or so if everything goes well. I'd gladly keep the Maxima past the time I'd normally unload a used car to get the Lotus. It's almost paid for and only has 59k miles on it.

The 911 is a much better daily driver for sure, but as pure sports cars go I think you'd be hard pressed to find something as pure for so little cash. My vote goes to the Elise hands down. It is sedate enough that you can drive it around town with your better half comfortably and then open it up at the track the next day.

Porsches are the one car I don't get. I've always thought they were ugly. It just doesn't look like a sports car. Well, they sort look like a "sports car" version of a VW Bug. I don't get what so many people see in them.

a divorce + buying a boxter might be cheaper than having a wife for the next 3 years

No doubt. I need to divorce this one before I relent and let her put the addition on the house. If that happens, my Porsche is going to be in my backyard as a permanent addition to the house. ++ mortgage payments, -- $$

The OP did say eternal sports car. If the Elise manages to last 40 years, then it can take a place next to the 911. Thats not to detract from the Elise, it is a monster of a go cart... err car.

A: Girly car IMO, not masculine at all.

B: No where near as good all around as a 911 as a daily driver

911 has timeless lines, Porsche has had A LOT of time to tweak its design.

Look at the Cayman as well, no magazine can stop talking about it's chassis, it supposedly handles like a go cart.

Well, Lotus can trace its heritage back to the mid 1940s. I wouldn't discount the Elise just because there wasn't a Lotus car built in the last 40 years that carried the that name. Lotus certainly has a long and healthy lineage and racing heritage.
