Nurburgring time for a standard 911 Carrera:Originally posted by: Marshallj
I found a pretty interesting article comparing the 350Z, the BMW M3 SMG 2, the Porsche 911, and the Z06.
The Z06 pretty handily beats out the competition, although the 350Z is a great value.
How does the Boxster S compare to the 911? I'd imagine since the 911 is a higher-end car it would perform better.

It's worth noting that a stock Miata runs 2:12.885 laps at Thunderhill as well.

The info you post is interesting, but I'd prefer to see a more neutral party doing the testing. Seems to me that a German guy driving on a German track would prefer a German car.Originally posted by: Marshallj

The Z06 would have to be 23 seconds faster each lap than the base C5 to match the standard 911. Seems unlikely.
Also, the 911 Targa is a particularly poor choice for a track comparison considering the extra weight that its special roof adds.

I'm not surprised that the 'Vette beats out the 911 on an American track, nor am I surprised that the 911 beats the 'Vette on a German track. Companies optimise for the conditions in which they feel that their products will be used.

Exactly, it's all about tradeoffs.Originally posted by: Marshallj
Interesting. So it's sort of like how in computer hardware, companies sometimes optimize their products to do well in a specific benchmark, and therefore it's no surprise to see a product do well in one benchmark but fall short in another.Originally posted by: Zenmervolt

So our comparison is beginning to get into specifics now, the cars are beginning to show that they're good on certain tracks.

I agree. We all know that the only "fake" Porsche is the Cayenne![]()

If you are capable of objective thought, a name by itself means nothing. A name is just a name. The vehicle behind the nameplate is the only think that matters.
When you say that being a Porsche is a good thing and an American car is a big negative, you are simply showing your bias towards those things before you even objectively compare them.

Uh, as a Porsche owner I can state with certainty that the people who only respect me because I drive a Porsche are the people I desire to bludgeon to death with my tyre iron. Let's be rational here, only a child would base his opinion of a person on the brand of car they drive.Originally posted by: Dark4ng3l
Dont forget than part of having a car if the "flashyness", a porsche is much better at than than any american car will ever be. Also the porsche will be more reliable and will have a superior resale value because of the name. Also driving in a porsche brings you respect, not driving a vette.
That said, the top two "would buy another car of the same make" brands according to CarTalk are Porsche and Honda. Entirely different rating system to be sure.Originally posted by: Marshallj
In the latest JD Powers reliability ratings, Porsche did do better than Chevrolet, but they were far behind Lexus, Infinity, Acura, Honda, and Toyota.linkyOriginally posted by: mrCide

They are closer to Buick in reliability than they are to Honda.
