If they are pushing 'social conservative' laws that limit your behavior and rights, does it make it ok if they are willing to follow their own views?

Not really. The hyocrisy is just a side issue that threatens to distract from the more important problems.

Hypocrisy exposed destroys the credibility of their policies.

It doesn't hurt, but I don't think it hits the most important issues.

Let's say they came out for a ban on alcohol. Now, if they drank a lot, it's be hypocrisy and that would hurt them. But if they don't drink at all - it's still an issue.

It's easy to overstate the hypocrisy issue in a way that implies that if they weren't hypocritical, the policy would be ok.

Now, does the hypocrisy expose some flaws in their poor understanidng of the issues they are trying to restrict?

Well, ya, it does that too - but not so entirely that their positions are countered by hypocrisy alone. There are pleny of porn banners who really don't view it.

I think that does account for a lot of it. People who are made to feel guilty for normal human emotions are more likely to enact them in less healthy ways because they have to hide it or don't want to admit it.

Quite so. People are magnetized around their guilt issues.

And one of the most liberal states in the Union passed a constitutional amendment to restrict civil rights to a minority group.

What is your point again?

Social conservatives binging on porn certainly poses a hypocritical scenario of "do as I say not as I do." However, spirituality and a relationship with God is still a healthy aspect of the human condition...organized religion, particularly when engaged in politics, crosses the line from spirituality to control.

A similar dynamic exists within demographics shifting more towards the secular...in the place of God, many have put medication and therapists.

Where else are they gonna get their needs? I mean they've pretty much shut down toe-tapping and the YMCA's are just full of liberal gays.

What other outlet for the uptight, go to church sunday-living a lie-I'm married and gay Republican to express his love for men?

Good for them, it's better than molesting kids or whatever it is that all those liberal gays do.

ATP&N proves it's stupidity once again.

Republican=Conservative=Christian (Nope!)

There are plenty of conservatives who aren't Christian, contrary to the apparent believe of many of you. H3ll, a lot of conservatives I've known would be better classified as pot smoking atheists. Generalizations FTL!

But as importantly, this article/study is spectacularly lame.

Their hypothesis/conclusion:

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

So, the thing was based on anonymous data?

And the 'heaviest' user state was Utah with 5.47 porn user per 1,000 connections (probably more than 1,000 users unless every account had only person using it - unlikely).

You think maybe even in the reddest states there might be at least 5 Libs out of a thousand conservatives? I'd say more like 4 out of 10.

Plus, if you're in Utah (or some other red states) where the heck else are you gonna get porn but the internent? In a lot of smaller towns in conservative areas (not all) 'adult" stores are not allowed.

Misleading title in the article, especially considering they have no idea of the political persuasion of the user.

Pure rationalization. Who is more hung up on sex, liberals or conservatives? Who would be more interested in porn, the more or the less hung up?

What the hell do you mean, why does anybody care? Sexual repression is a disease. Half the country are conservatives. A huge segment of the American population are mentally ill. Mental illness is dangerous for all who live around the mentally ill. The mentally ill just elected a disaster for eight years of American catastrophe, from which we may not recover. Who the hell cares. The living, the breathing, the animated, the thinking, the conscious, the aware, anybody above the level of a slug. Pathetic that you even ask.

Who cares that the Taliban want to keep women in the dark ages. Jesus Christ on a stick. Could you please start using your head!

Fixed ;)

Not to long ago on this forum (and elsewhere in the SM) is was opined that the Repub party (under GWB etc) had 'used' the RR for their vote then abandoned them.

I don't know who is 'in charge' of the Repub party, I don't think anyone really does. In fact, I don't think anyone actually is at this point.

The RR is only a fairly small part of the Repub base anyway. Many Christian people vote Dem, always have.

Rationalization?

Hahaha.

You don't even need emperical data to support your view, you just know because of your 'philosiphy'.

Tell me again who's rationalizing?

I don't know what 'hung up' really means. And from whose PoV is that defined/judged?

I don't know who would be more interested in porn. Neither do you beyond speculating.

Anyway, you should be concerning yourself with teh facts I mention above.

"Teh facts" that you're speaking of aren't really facts at all. It's you asking yourself a series of questions and then inserting your personal opinion.

In fact, the original article simply pointed out some basic facts that they noticed when examining the data: 8 out of 10 of the biggest consumers of porn are red states that voted "R" in the 2008 elections. It's certainly an interesting trend, right? I think it's pretty obvious from this survey alone who's more interested in porn.

Feel free to ignore the data though.

Of course, it's obvious. People who signed up for porn are more interested in porn.

Pulling anything else out of these numbers is just making stuff up. Even listed state-wide, the data set is way too large.
