The Catholic Churchs abuse scandle is less than the general publics per capita. To err is human to cover it up is the big mistake IMO. Another thing is the Church needs to let priest marry once again so they stop getting guilty gays joining the priesthood. The Pope is right we are a nation mired in unhappiness caused by materialism. Look in this thread or any other where cynical and hatred emotions flow like water.
Materialism doesn't make me unhappy, self-rightous hypocrites who live in glass houses, yet still cast the first stone sure irritate the crap out of me though 😉
You make the absurd assumption that you are aware of your feelings. Trust me, your feelings are so deeply buried it would take a miracle to dig them up. Look at the pills the drugs the booze the empty sports and entertainment. What do you know about joy and the experience of transcendent oceanic love. What are the things you value most. Do you remember what it was like to be two and one with the universe. Our whole existence is nothing but an ersatz for being.

What do you know about joy and the experience of transcendent oceanic love. What are the things you value most
I'd go as far as to say when I was experiencing watching my wife give birth to our son, that transcendent joy and love were the exact feelings/emotions 🙂 What I value most is the love of my family i.e. my wife, son, sibilings and their children, and parents :sun: I also share your enlightenment concerning what is really important, and completely agree that we often substitue artifices in place of real life/being 🙂 I walked away from a substantial income and potential for a great deal more, along with the trappings that accompany it, for much more personally satisfying pursuits. Namely, my wife's love, to personally experience the awesomeness that is raising and nurturing my own child, and enjoy the magnificence of what remains of the natural world. While I can appreciate the creature comforts and assuredly have some, I do not put them before my personal code of honor, integrity, and ethics, and that's all I have to say about that. 🙂
DAPUNISHER, maybe you would agree with me that spirituality isn't necessarily about religion and that the things you mentioned we don't have enough of in our country. The Pope is the CEO of the largest property owning corp in the world, but being a hypocrite doesn't make him wrong. Perhaps I was over dramatic in trying to suggest that what is killing spirituality, in my opinion, is self hate. We are complex beings and can hate ourselves and also show great love. Neither completely cancels the other or there would be no good at all in the world. It was good to read your reply.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Both the Pope and Bush claim to speak for God. Neither one of them gets much respect around here.

Maybe it's because both of them were voted in to office by a bunch of boobs in robes.

Or maybe because neither one of them can successfully finish a sentence.

At least the Pope has a legitimate medical excuse.

.
😀 ...boobs in robes.

The pope can't finish a sentence in over 50 languages. Bush is still working on 1.

like to see him return our souless us catholic church goers cash he depends on. wonder what % comes from the us to keep his cushy vatican afloat. ah well someone already mentioned the boston mess. the man has no moral authority anymore.

worlds largest land owner? i think its stil them😛

The Pope should be worrying about his own ass. Hes going to kick the bucket soon, and unless the Pope gets a get out of jail free card he has a first class ticket to hell. If you believe in that, that is.

Yes, but the difference is that you don't sit surrounded by opulence with servants that cater to your every need and decree that others are too materialistic 😉 It begs the question why this wasn't mentioned 20+yrs ago when American 80's Pop culture glorified materialism and becoming a well off yuppie was where it was "at"? and I answer 😛 Because the difference between then and now is the American perception of the Catholic church and the mass exodus of it's parishioners and their contributions dropping in the wake of all the controversy surrounding the molestations, "Hush" money paid to cover up, and evidently, knowledge by the superiors of what was happening and turning a blind eye to it so to speak.

So, the Pope tells us now that we are losing our way, we are becoming a materialistic and godless country, when it's no more the case now than 20+yrs ago. Why? because he is using this issue to simultaneously pander to anti-american sentiments overseas to help increase funding there, while trying to guilt trip church members here who stopped going to services because of the scandals, in to coming back to church and bringing their wallets with them 😉 I may have this way wrong but as I'm not in public office I can live with it if I am 😛

Look Punisher, I am not going to sit here and go back and fourth with you on this as it is pretty clear from your above posts your viewpoint on the catholic church and more specifically your percieved hypocracy of the pope's actions with regards to this matter, however I will say that I'm willing to bet the current pope never invisioned himself making it to where he is now, or at least not early on in his journey, gotta remember when he signed up for priesthood part of the deal was living without, at least in the beginning....

As for why now? your theories do seem to make some sense, especially with the proposed church shutdowns here in the NE, however I don't know if I would go so far as to say he is playing to the AA sentiments abroad, moreso just using our highly materialistic and brash culture as a perfect example as 99.999% of the world thinks of us when they think of conspicious consumerism.

With regards to Conjur, I must say I am somewhat surprised but not really as you strike me as the type to eschew worship of material goods and look down on keeping up with the joneses as it fits your socialist mentality 🙂 personally I think there is nothing wrong with liking nice stuff, buying nice stuff, working for nice stuff even if you see that your neighbor has it...but I think people are focusing too much on stuff and not enough on what is or should be really important in life...I am probabily worse than most with regards to this as I have many many hobbies and buying, and maintaining stuff takes up alot of my time, more than I wish it did, I also love to "keep up with the joneses" but subconsciously wish I didn't as damn it is expensive, especially on a tech's budget. Oh well...

What a senile old bastage  He better worry more about why he is hiring and keeping a bunch of pedos to run his scam of a business! That's a primary reason why American Catholics are doing things with their disposable income that don't include sticking it in his collection plates! :|

I read many NE parishes will have to close, they are going to be in a forced restructuring because the money isn't flowing in like it used to. Nothing is more grimly ironic than having the CEO of a business like Catholcism tell us how Godless we are  His employees molest children and I'm suppossed to feel that I would get spirituality by attending his McChurch?!? :disgust:

the pope and the catholic church are pathetic. I don't see them publicly condemn the child molesting priests here. Who gives a crap about what he says.

"I'm sorry, if anyone here is Catholic. Uh, I'm not sorry if you're offended. I'm actually sorry, just the fact that you're Catholic. Gotta be one of the most ludicrous f**ing beliefs ever, like these vampire priests sink their twin fangs of Guilt and Sin into you as a child, and suck your joy of life out of you the rest of your f**king existence."

so what would you say is a better alternative? muslim? judaism? ...right, sorry but IMHO they are all pretty bad when you get down to the nitty gritty...the only two which might evade your scrutiny phukus are atheism and buddhism and even that is suspect.

I believe in my own superiority. Organized religion isn't for everyone, most people would probably be better off with their own customized religion. 4 times a month I pray in the direction of St. Louis.

I think that we should all be concerned about crass materialism, no matter what your spirituality.

.. i say on a board dedicated to people who are crassly materialistic when it comes to computers.

The Pope should get Priests to stop raping boys, stop trying to control the reproductive rights of women, stop preventing people who disagree with his stupid policies from taking Communion (religious blackmail anyone?) and in general STFU.
btw I was raised a Catholic. I despise that Church. Considering what they've done to generations of young boys, it should be disbanded.

Why so much anger at the Pope? Sheezh, it seems a bit silly to me. And, the Pope is going to Hell? Bwuahahahaha, ok, if you say so. How would anyone presume to know what God will do?

Moonbeam, perhaps our technology drives us from spirituality, not self-loathing? I suspect that the spiritual part of being human is out of sync with the emotional, physical and intellectual parts, which, are in turn, out of sync with each other. Instead of a coherent Keplarian solar system of values and
feelings we have a case of maximum entropy. On the other hand we never have had such coherence and probably never will have it.

Im telling you its just classic Catholic bashing. All orginizations have those that are rooted out eventually, and some even for slowing that process down. I am a proud Catholic and am glad that we have purged ourselves of people who dont need to part of the administration of faith.

If you notice in the above posts, some who are/were Catholic, some who are Protestant and some who have no faith at all in God expressed personal negative views for various reasons but which are just that - their personal views - nothing more.

They may continue to hold those same harsh views the rest of their lives, regardless of anything that occurrs with regard to progress or even if the same behavior is exibited by society as a whole by a much higher percentage because they simply hate the Catholic Church. I dont. I love the Catholic Church and the Pope.

Just because I mock him doesn't mean I hate him. I do find what he says hypocritical though.

And I love watchin' the Pope bounce around in his little Popemobile. That's gotta be hoot number one on my f-ckin CNN list. I want a whole show of the Pope just bouncin' around in that all-terrain Popemobile with the three feet of bulletproof plexiglass around him. Boy, there's faith in action. You see, you know he's the spokesmen for God because only God's spokesmen would need bulletproof plexiglass. Don't you think? Don't y'all read that the same way?
