VATICAN CITY - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II warned several U.S. bishops Friday that American society is in danger of turning against spirituality in favor of materialistic desires, giving way to a "soulless vision of life."

Oh No - we aren't going to be brainless followers of The Church!!! What Will We Do??!!??

He's old, cut him some slack. He's probably going to die within a year.

I may be a semi-secular guy, but I feel human life is incomplete without some spirituality.

What a senile old bastage  He better worry more about why he is hiring and keeping a bunch of pedos to run his scam of a business! That's a primary reason why American Catholics are doing things with their disposable income that don't include sticking it in his collection plates! :|

I read many NE parishes will have to close, they are going to be in a forced restructuring because the money isn't flowing in like it used to. Nothing is more grimly ironic than having the CEO of a business like Catholcism tell us how Godless we are  His employees molest children and I'm suppossed to feel that I would get spirituality by attending his McChurch?!? :disgust:

Yeah. I love how the numbnuts is so worried about meeting his maker that he drives around in a bullet resistant bubble  You'd think that being so tight with the big guy, and given how much they talk about the beauty and wonderous bliss that is Heaven, that he'd be in as big a hurry as these Terrorist kooks to make it to paradise ;)

While the catholic church certainly has issues, he's spot on. I was just thinking about this last night. The most fervent believer and the most unbelieving atheist never learns the truth until he dies.

Damned straight! Furthermore, the hypocracy is infuriating. So what's his point? I can be like the Catholic leadership and have it all, materialistic possesion and spirituality? Give me a fvckin' break. Spirituality and high ranking Catholic officials are often mutually exclusive.

I can't believe how sacreligious you are being. First, the pope has dealt with the pedophile scandal. He has said numerous times how bad this was, and he himself should not be punished for this. The Catholic Church is not a business. The only reason you are complaining is that someone is trying to speak a truth about American culture. He is right, we are materialistic. I am, and all of you are. No one of us is willing to give up all of our possessions to serve the Lord.

The reason NE churches are closing is because of the lawsuits. There simply is not enough money to fund a church. Yes, it is their faults, but not all Catholic priests molest children! That is a hauge generalization! Besides, he is not the CEO of the Church, he just tries to help bishops and priests and followers in need.

The pope actually does not own many things at all. He doesn't even own the clothes on his back. Besides, if you have ever read about JPII's life, you would see that he has suffered a lot over his lifetime.

Give it a rest. No way am I buying that FUD. The Arch bishop of Boston mentioned above lives in a Mansion! He really divested himself of wordly possessions to serve the lord  Furthermore, how do you know how far the molestation goes, or how far back???? There has been cover up after cover up, and pay off after pay off!

I see you share the church's hypocracy. You accusse me of a "huge generalization" then make a bigger one

What f'in' difference does it make wether the church or him owns it in name or not? He still gets to use it doesn't he? That is just a preposterous assertion IMO. I guess the Arch bishop doesn't own the mansion and such either then? If so, BFD, he still lives there, gets to drive a fancy car, and wear expensive designer frocks :disgust:

Even Bill O'Rielly of the great narrow view, who's catholic, can see what a sham they are, why can't you?

You gave me an example of materialism in the Catholic Church FROM AMERICA. Wow, you really know how to give examples. The pope himself and most priests around the world give up their worldly possessions. Thats why the pope has said that AMERICANS are materialistic.

I did not make a generalization. The consensus from around the world is that America is materialistic. There is no consensus around the world that all priests molest children. Case closed.

I see you are a religious fanatic, end of debate. BTW, is hypocracy part of the indoctrination? Because you say consensus that Americans are materialistic, then say ALL priest, why not say all Americans? That's right, because no one say all, just like I didn't say all priests  Then you say they divest themselves to serve the church, damned nice digs they have for penniless men  Enjoy the last word I have nothing further to add on the issue :)

I am not a religious fanatic, I just like to point out people that make wrong statements and say things that are truly sacreligious. If I were a fanatic, I would be converting you now wouldn't I?

Sacreligious?? How can that be when he doesn't even believe in that Mumbo Jumbo?
