also, is there any separation between politics and religion ?

Tradition. Not much other than that

Long ago a guy named Mercurius became pope and they thought it would be weird to have a pope with the name of a roman god so they changed it to John II.

Tradition since then.

never a fan of either, so I wasn't sure. I'm glad I can despise both with true sincerity now. 🙂

He served in the Wehrmacht during WW II.

In 1944... at the end of the war. My grandpa fought for the Axis too, because he was forced to. But he hid in the woods and waited until the war was just about over to join. I wouldn't be surprised if Ratzinger did the same if he joined in '44
