I bet they voted in that nazi ratzinger as the new pope

nazi?

He served in the Wehrmacht during WW II.

Being German doesn't make you a Nazi.

No, being a soldier in Hitler's army and fighting the Allies doesn't make you a nazi either eh, just like flying a plane into the WTC for Bin Laden didn't make those guys terrorists.

Some people refused to join the army, sabotaged what they were told to do, or deserted, but he joined the Nazi fight against the Allies.

In 1944... at the end of the war. My grandpa fought for the Axis too, because he was forced to. But he hid in the woods and waited until the war was just about over to join. I wouldn't be surprised if Ratzinger did the same if he joined in '44

He was captured and locked up as POW in '45, so he didn't run and hide immediately.

he is the old/administrator guy, right? so they figure he'll live for 5-10 years to tide them over, i.e. they decided to procrastinate and put off any hard decisions for now

Yeah looks like he was impressed, but he was definately trained by the Wermacht and served as a POW so technically was a Nazi, though clearly it's a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Nonetheless you KNOW people are going to make hay out of it, that and the fact that he heads the office that was the Inquisition. They're controversial things, and ignorant people will go ape-sh!t over them.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you were placed into that situation. You talk all high and mightly, but what would do you were forced to join? Refusing would mean the possibly of being executed.

Yes, he did. It's not like you can join the German army and then go to the POW camp the next day. But he came close. He joined "in November of 1944. In 1945 he was interned in a POW camp as a German soldier. By June he was released." So within 7 months time he joined, was trained, was captured, and released. All coincidentalyl happening at the end of the war.

Considering the most likely candidate is someone who makes the Inquisition look more liberal than Clinton

Let the Genocide begin.

Planet was overpopulated anyway <shrugs>

How do we know he wasn't a wilful Nazi? He had the ability to leave Hitler's Germany did he not? Ah well, that's the beautiful thing about democracy. The masses have the power, and when things go awry, it's the government to blame.

From CNN special off the front page.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger
Once the archbishop of Munich and for many years prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, Ratzinger, 78, is one of the most powerful men in the Vatican and is widely acknowledged as a leading theologian. Ratzinger has served for 20 years as John Paul II's chief theological adviser. As a young priest he was on the progressive side of theological debates but shifted to the right after the student revolutions of 1968. In the Vatican, he has been the driving force behind crackdowns on liberation theology, religious pluralism, challenges to traditional moral teachings on issues such as homosexuality, and dissent on such issues as women's ordination. The dean of the College of Cardinals since November 2002, he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Paul VI in June 1977.
