Bear with me for a second... I'm not religious and I realize there's thousands and thousands of years of tradition behind this... but why don't they pick someone who's younger (not about 80 years old already) and why is there no "serving period" where you are done at a certain age and they pick a new one ? Why is he there until the end of his life ? We'll just have to endure more of this "oh no the pope is dying and that's symbolic!" hoopla in 20 years again...

Because generally wouldnt an older person be wiser and have more experience than a younger delegate, and they would probably have proven themselves worthy of the position before

Otherwise we would have to endure it every four years? 😕

I am not catholic but Its because they don't WANT a pope to last a long time. It sounds bad...but they want change of leadership. Just like how we don't have a president for 60 years. It would be bad for the country as a whole as a long pope run is bad for catholicism as a whole

i think a new election that is no big deal is better than mass media coverage over a few weeks of the next pope's death. That's the hoopla I'm referring to. Do they know that half the world's population don't give a crap (no disrespect) ?... yet it's made into a big deal and "they" like it.

I would guess that they don't pick someone younger because age=experience. These guys have been around the block.

I don't know why they don't have a "serving period". It makes sense, but there are a lot of public offices around the world where you're in it for life.

Someone who's 65 is less wise than someone who's 80 ? I can see a comparison of 25 to 60 but come on....

Whether or not you agree with his religious inclinations, the pope is among the world's most powerful political leaders. I imagine that a regularly occurring papal election would still be a media frenzy every time.

Considering the most likely candidate is someone who makes the Inquisition look more liberal than Clinton I wouldn't mind if the smoke was just the whole building catching on fire and all the old farts inside burning alive.
