It might have been interesting to explore the wilderness. Although days of walking through wild, uncut fields of dense grassland might have been tiring.
A
complete tangent from the thread topic, but I often find myself thinking about that, when going for long urban walks. Always find myself wondering what it would have looked like to walk the same route, 100, 500, 1000 years ago. Especially so here, where one usually stumbles upon bits of parkland or commons or undeveloped woods (that always turn out to be surviving remnants of the huge forest that used to encompass the entire area before it was swallowed up by the city in the course of the last few centuries).
I wish someone or some organisation would create some sort of computer walkthrough model of the area (using something akin to the Crysis or Elder Scrolls engine? But minus the shooting or sword-play) that would give an accurate "archeologist/historian's best guess" representation of what it all looked like at specific points in the past. Be a big project to do accurately, and wouldn't be much of a 'game', so don't know who would create such a thing.
