And Catholics wonder why people think that the church is irrelevant.

Yeah, a religion with 1.1 Billion worshippers is irrelevant. :disgust:

Sorry to burst your bubble but religion is going the way of the dodo...

Yeah the Catholic church does seem to be on the downward slope....

Downward slope? I think chronically stabbing little boys goes beyond a downward slope.

Yes people are going to have sex.

Condoms encourage them to have sex.

If someone has AIDS, they should not have sex, even with a condom. It's not worth putting your partner at risk.

Condoms don't encourage folks to have sex, sex encourages folks to have sex. The Pope's position is logically indefensible, don't try.

The illusion that condoms prevent STD's 100% of the time indicates that sick people will engage in sex using a condom, when they otherwise would not have.

That's simply logical.

The vaccine against measles isn't 100% effective either. Does that mean it shouldn't be applied at all?

Measles isn't a life-threatening/ruining pandemic. Also, the vaccine against measles doesn't involve you engaging in exactly the type of activity which would cause you to contract it.
The spreading of most infectious diseases can be traced backed to human behavior. It appears to me that you don?t think people should be engaged in that specific behavior and use the commonality amongst most infectious disease as a way to imply your stance is morally superior and thus valid for everyone.

His science is pretty sound. That's good enough for me!

Science? What science is that? The science of staring at your asshole in the mirror? Because that's about as close to actual science as the pope seems to get.

You should realize that the pope's job is to spew ideological religious dogma at the rest of the world. That's it. There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that the AIDS crisis in Africa "...cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems."

*tap tap tap*

How many African Catholics will die because the Pope advised them not to use condoms? Okay, probably not that many- but probably more than none. That's fucked up.

This stupid crap again? I remember we had a thread about this some years ago, exactly the same title. The dogma is still strong with this one. Cyclowizard should be along shortly to defend it, like he does with anything regarding popes or catholicism. Where are you Capt. Vatican? 😉

For analysis:

With a large poor and minority population, the District of Columbia has struggled with HIV for decades. Its report on Monday showed the number of people with HIV infections rose 22 percent from 2006 to 2007.

The city said it is one of two in the nation with a major condom distribution program, distributing 1.5 million in 2008.

What do you guys make of this?

Think how bad it be if they were not given out and told "Condoms are the devil..."

I bet that abstaining will prevent you from obtaining or spreading it. Can't really argue with that logic. They only distribute protection because they don't believe the Africans are capable of abstaining.

The Pope is simply providing an idealistic view... that is his job.
