It's soda. Pop is just annoying and anyone who calls it coke (unless referring to coca-cola) is an idiot.

It seems to me that in it's original form it as "soda pop" -- "soda" being the adjective modifying "pop," the noun. If you're going to shorten it, the noun should be preserved. Hence, "pop." Similarly, with regard to something like "blue jeans," we shorten it to "jeans," not "blues."

Soda. All you yankees who say "Pop" need to wake up and get out of the 1950's. Speaking of annoying, when someone says pop, the best way I can explain it to you is referring you to that annoying waiter guy in Office Space who kept trying to up-sell them. All the southerners who say "Coke" give us a bad name, and anybody that says "Soda Pop" tries too hard.

EDIT: lol, I just remembered a soda machine I saw at a store once that said "Cold Drinks" on it in huge white letters.

Soda, definitely.

A hundred miles to the west (Western NY + most of Canada) seems to prefer pop.

My grandmother (Canadian) once explained it this way (don't know if she was kidding or not). Soda is either a cracker (Soda biscuits - a term inherited from Britain - or something you bake with - baking soda). Therefore, they dislike calling a sweet drink "soda". :)

That is what it is around here, i know my family asks for a soda, it is a cracker.

We all say pop, but I know myself, I only order coke or pepsi, so for ease, I order a cola a thte resteraunts...
