EDIT: lol, I just remembered a soda machine I saw at a store once that said "Cold Drinks" on it in huge white letters.

A hundred miles to the west (Western NY + most of Canada) seems to prefer pop.
My grandmother (Canadian) once explained it this way (don't know if she was kidding or not). Soda is either a cracker (Soda biscuits - a term inherited from Britain - or something you bake with - baking soda). Therefore, they dislike calling a sweet drink "soda".![]()
