This question reminds me of this one:

"What substance was Han Solo frozen in?"

Carbonite?

"No no, I'm sorry, I'm very sorry. The correct answer is 'Who gives a sh!t?'"

I usually don't drink carbonated, sweetened, flavored water. I prefer water or tea!

In NYC, we call it soda... and since we are the "capital of the world", that's what the proper name is :p

That being said, soda sucks. Water FTW!

This is acceptable:

1>"I want a soda"
2>"What kind?"
1>"I want a diet coke"

So is this:

1>"I want some pop"
2>"What kind?"
1>"I want a diet coke"

This is what an idiot says:

1>"I want a coke"
2> <Hands person a can of Coca Cola>
1>"WTFBBQ I WANTED A DR PEPPER!"

Except in the south, the 3rd one goes...

"I want a coke"
"What kind?"
"Dr Pepper"

and this is fine

I also find "soda" acceptable. Pop is the sound a balloon makes when it bursts. Or what some people might call their father.

as has been established in every other thread concerning this, the correct term is Pop.
I say it without even thinking about it.

I live in the northeast, so Soda. NJ Is solid dark green.

What I wondered about when I first saw that map was -
- What's the deal with St. Louis and Milwaukee?
- Why can't North Carolinans make up their minds?
- What would fall under "other"?

I'm in the south and have never done that or seen anyone order that way.
Why would someone make ordering a two step process? Just say what you want in the first place.

1>"I want a coke"
2> Well? Black Cherry, black cherry vanilla, cherry, vanilla, diet, no caffeine, no caffeine or sugar, splenda or aspartame based, or just default?
3> "What? You do not serve diet black cherry vanilla??!?!?! "

It's soda. Pop is just annoying and anyone who calls it coke (unless referring to coca-cola) is an idiot.

Ditto.

Ever tell your wife to pick up a box of Kleenexes and she brings you Puffs with aloe vera or maybe ask for some Pringles and she brings back Lays baked potato chips in the cylinder?

Using "coke" as a generic term for soft drinks is not idiotic, it is the most popular type of soft drink.

I am from Mississippi and I use the words "soft drinks" to describe soda / pop / coke (generic usage) and in my entire life here in the south, I have never had a waiter hand me anything other than a coke when I order a coke or even ask me about flavors of soft drinks when coke is specified.

Please add "soft drink" to the poll.

A lot of older folks in south TX say "soda water."
Or, the redneck version: "sodee wahter."

Personally I can't stand it.

No... I ask for tissues or chips (and my wife knows exactly what chips I eat, and if she didn't I'd specify ;)). I don't use brand names in place of generic names unless I'm referring to that brand name or if that brand name has become a generic term (i.e. cellophane).

But I won't make fun of southerners for saying coke. You say what everyone else says around you while you're growing up.
