Poor in Northeast set to freeze to death

It is obviously cheaper to re-locate these people to warmer southern states than to subsidize fuel costs.

Or is the plan to cull the poor and elderly population?

http://news.yahoo.com/northeast-states-cut-heating-aid-poor-100438979.html

Mary Power is 92 and worried about surviving another frigid New England winter because deep cuts in federal home heating assistance benefits mean she probably can't afford enough heating oil to stay warm.

She lives in a drafty trailer in Boston's West Roxbury neighborhood and gets by on $11,148 a year in pension and Social Security benefits. Her heating aid help this year will drop from $1,035 to $685. With rising heating oil prices, it probably will cost her more than $3,000 for enough oil to keep warm unless she turns her thermostat down to 60 degrees, as she plans.

"I will just have to crawl into bed with the covers over me and stay there," said Power, a widow who worked as a cashier and waitress until she was 80. "I will do what I have to do."

Thousands of poor people across the Northeast are bracing for a difficult winter with substantially less home heating aid coming from the federal government.

"They're playing Russian roulette with people's lives," said John Drew, who heads Action for Boston Community Development, Inc., which provides aid to low-income residents in Massachusetts.

"The winter of 2011-12 could be memorable for the misery and suffering of thousands of frigid households," New Hampshire's Concord Monitor newspaper said in an editorial. "Heating oil prices are expected to hit record highs, and federal fuel assistance may reach a record low for recent years."

Last February, President Barack Obama proposed cutting the program nearly in half, calling for about $2.5 billion.

Not paying a bill for someone is killing them now? I am apparently killing poor people by not paying for their bills? FFS GTFO

We used to turn down the heat to 50 at night with no problems when we were kids.

I can remember going to see my grandfather and his place was considered cold.

You wear woolen socks, flannels and sweaters; One can easily survive with the house at 60.
May not be comfortable as if 74, but is not life threatening.
It is called bundling up in layers. But bleeding hearts are used to 75 so 60 must be torture.

The lady talked about understands, it is intended to be a sob piece.

I wonder how many of those poor play the lottery, have an account at the local liquor store and smoke.

There goes their fuel money.

$3000 for heating a small trailer for a year? It costs me around $100 a month in electricity to power everything in my apartment, including heating to 72.

If she's too fucking dumb to get an electric heater and wear a sweater, then she is on her own. It's too stupid to be real, so I assume the author is a bleeding heart retard and made it up.

Maybe she should spend $100 and have someone fix those drafts?

Why didn't Joe Biden's $40 billion 'weatherization' stimulus fix her house? Wasn't that the point? We were told it would solve all these problems and create thousands of jobs!

Maybe Biden can pay her bill with all that money he gave his friends.

I wonder how much false attribution & innuendo you can introduce to the discussion...

You're probably just getting warmed up, huh?

Electricity costs a lot more per btu than fuel oil...

But do pretend to have some vague idea what you're talking about.

If we actually wanted to reduce energy consumption we'd encourage these people to move to warmer parts of the country. The energy savings in heating costs outweigh the AC usage.

edit: Spending $3000 per year in heating for a small trailer is insane. That number has to be bullshit. I rented an old uninsulated farmhouse a few years ago and it only cost $275 in natural gas during the coldest month in winter.

The elderly are less tolerant of cold/heat if you didn't know. I'm guessing 60 degrees for a 92 year old is going to feel like 50 to us.

Cost of heating oil is more than double the price of natural gas.

We spend nearly 4 trillion a year and we have people freezing to death? How much more do we need to spend to stop this? Another couple trillion?

Not sure why the progressive utopia that is Boston and MA don't solve this by raising taxes on their own citizens. I guess I missed the part in the U.S. constitution where the Feds must provide heat.

Problem is old people (all people) get attached to homes friends and family. They often own where they live, cannot or will not sell out and move (loneness is also a killer).
Basically to qualify for support she would have to give up life as she knows it.
Basically a pole shelter with straw bale insulation would likely allow her to heat her home. This would be in violation of building codes, zoning, and lord knows what else.
Hot climates are just as bad, air conditioning poorly insulated homes probably as expensive.
There have never been so many old people in reasonable health before. The way capitalism works is hard on many people.
What will you do when it is you, or your parents, at risk.

With unemployment so high she probably can't find a job.

On the bright side, with less heating oil being burned = less pollution.
