Highway 300 miles or so across FL I was getting 23mpg in my LS2 GTO with the auto (which isn't as fuel efficient as the manual version)

that is HORRID gas mileage...

whats the hp rating on the gto? 300hp?

i dont have a 300hp car to compare with, but my 240hp accord that weighs 3200+ lbs gets 34mpg cruising 300 miles on the highway going a little over the speed limit.

It is more like 400HP for the LS2 motor. And the automatic is only a 4 speed, as opposed to the new 6 speed automatics in the G8 .. That is why the mpg is not so good. Also a lot depends on the use of the right foot. Hard acceleration or very spirited driving will cause the mpg to go down.

I know that you're fanatical and that this won't help at all, but here goes.

My GTO has 400hp/395tq, and weighs in around 3800lbs. You don't buy this car for the gas mileage, you buy it for the experience. My garage has two cars over 400hp sitting in it, and I daily drive my GTO.

I spend under $90/month on gas as my daily commute isn't terrible. I do pay around $1900/yr for insurance on both of my cars combined, with full coverage on each though.

I'm also under 25, so that doesn't help despite a clean record.

Once you do complete your research you will find that it's going to be very difficult for you to come up with more efficient hp to mpg cars than the ones powered by the LSx series of motors.

The GTO has 66.5% more power while being 20% heavier, and with the major downside of only being 45% less fuel efficient than the Honda you're yapping about.

Whats the other car? Thats a nice ride for a DD. Gas Mileage sucks in my car but I did not buy it for the mpg at all, its actually not too bad on the highway (I get round 23-24).

Louis, if you're gonna talk smack, you really gotta get your facts straight first or you'll look like an idiot. Hit up Edmunds.com. They've got pricing, performance specs and info for pretty much all cars for the last 25 years. It's a good place to cross shop and compare vehicles.

Now as far as your comparo of a 240hp Honda that gets 34mpg to a 400hp GTO that gets 23mpg, you're wrong. The GTO has 2/3rds more power and gets less than 1/3 worse gas mileage. If anything, that is friggin' impressive as hell. The GTO also outweighs the Accord by 440lbs too.

Here are links to the numbers for these two cars on Edmunds. Even though this is comparing apples to oranges, take a look and maybe you'll change your mind.

$90 a month on gas? Wow. You must work two blocks from your house. Why not walk? Lol. I think I spend more than that on the gas I use to just start it up.

I probably drop somewhere in the range of 400 a month on gas. My daily commute is about 12 miles each direction. Mostly city driving with stoplights and the like so I average around 16 mpg with the 6 speed. Gas is definitely a consideration for someone buying this car. It takes premium and it drinks like a fish. My Contour wasn't a slouch with the fuel either though so when I got the goat I knew what I was getting into.

$400 a month? That's gotta hurt.
Like everyone has said, this isn't the car you get if you're worried about fuel economy.

my commute to work is 50 miles round trip, mostly highway. as long as i didn't go right foot happy, i think i'd get pretty close to 20mpg, which just for work, comes out to about $200/month @ $4/gal. right now my commuting is worse than that, so i think i'd be ok.

Quoted for the LOL. Now your previous post recommending a friggen Accord over a GTO makes sense.

I fill up about twice per month around $45/each fill up at this point.
My commute is around 9 miles each way, with probably 5 stop lights along the way. I also work 7:30am-4:00pm, so I'm not in the worst of traffic either.

I get around 260-280 miles per tank with pure city driving.

My other car is a 98 Trans Am with a 6 speed.

Actually, I'm mistaken about that. That's during the summer when I'm driving a lot more outside my normal commute. My fiancee and I usually take a trip to her parents house up north which is a good 110-120 miles. Or we'll go to one of the big malls in Danbury or West Nyack. Two or more trips like that in a month will get me to 400 bucks worth of gas.

Lately I've been a bit of a home body and my gas bill has dropped significantly. I'm usually under 200 a month now as I'm only going to work and hitting the grocery store. December will be high because of traveling to visit relatives and Christmas shopping.

Interesting a simple post about the GTO could generate such a long discussion. Must be an awesome car...

The GTO seems like a cheap way to get a lot of power and decent overall setup BUT it seems like the type of car you will get sick of VERY quickly.

That has been my experience talking to owners who sold theirs off, which is why you see so many on thw used market.

$4 a gallon? Where are you at? The premium here is $2.65.

I'm not bashing you, the goat or anything. I was surprised at your gas bill. The $4/gal. shines light on that. I have crap mileage in the Tundra (13mpg in the city on a real bad day). One way is 6mi. I fill up once every 2 weeks and my gas bill is normally under $120 a month (87 octane @ $2.45, 23 gall fill up).

oh no, i'm saying that's my estimated cost at $4/gal. Premium is about $2.80 where I live. So even at $4, that's not a horrible cost IMO. Right now I probably spend about $120/mo with my current (and a bit ridiculous) commuting. Mind you I have a Passat 1.8T, so if I *did* have a GTO.. yeah, my costs would be quite a bit higher :D

i do, its because they've given me and my family 6 cars with nothing more than schedule maintenance. Dates back from the 80's, with 3 of them going 200k+ and 3 more that are fairly new and haven't reached that point yet.

i dont think a family will ever have own 6 pontiacs after the first one or two they'll vow never to own one again... they're not exactly the most fun to drive cars where people dont care about reliability and only drive it for "fun" till it dies. and people dont buy it for reliability just because... they're not reliable.

Where are the mods? Can we get a ban for constant thread crapping? Jesus Christ!

The GTO has one of the most bulletproof engines ever made. Keep an eye out for the suspension (or replace yourself) and enjoy! They may not look great, but they don't look bad IMHO. To be fair, when you are smoking others in cars that have a little more styling cues, you won't really care. :)

It's certainly not the ugliest car on the road, here's mine:

Different wheels really help the look of this car. The ones Pontiac gave it look so plastic too me.

I love pulling up to one with a nice exhaust setup on it though! Don't really see very many of them these days.

The GTO is a great car. i do miss mine. i bought a Brazen Orange 06 new. only real mods aside from the obligatory air intake was a pedders suspension drop and the wheels.

anyways, ive since moved to a G8 GT for a few reasons. when i sold my 97 grand prix GTP to a friend, i started using the goat daily. unfortunately, i missed the large truck and people carrying abilities. the trunk was definitely annoyingly small. the back seat as mentioned, is roomy and comfy, but getting back there is a pain. the power seats are a bit slow moving to allow the rear access. they are amazingly comfy seats though. anyway, my G8 GT gives me everything the goat had plus fixes its shortcomings; huge trunk, easy to haul ppl, better mileage and ive since made it faster than my goat (intake, full exhaust incl long tube headers, cats, xpipe, straight-through muffs and a tune.). now i just need to get the suspension done and ill be happy (tire/fender gap annoys me).

i recommend G8 GT over the GTO if u require a decent trunk (with pass through even!) and will carry more than two people often.
