the vibe seems to be a decent economical car...they have the gt 2.4 version priced very low with the employee pricing...seems like a lot of bang for your buck..toyota made?

It is essentially toyota made and it is a peach of a deal if you like it.

The G8 looks really great compared to the previous Pontiac sedans. I wish it was a little bit smaller and lighter, with better fuel economy. I would love a big V8 like that again, but I couldn't justify fuel economy in the teens around town and 24ish on the highway.

I sat in the G8 at the car show a few months ago, and the interior felt solid and well made. Doors and trunk closing felt solid also.

They should've left the styling of the Holden alone, it looks better than the G8. I could live without the fake hood scoops and the Pontiac grille.

The Pontiac grill doesn't bother me...but the fake hood scoops could definitely go.

For what it is, the G8 appears to be a pretty nice car. I had an '05 GTO, and, while pretty nice also, it had some definite flaws (i.e. the gas tank in the trunk, and the lack of ipod connector in the stereo).

Comparing a G6 (FWD, V6 powered, poorly received) with a G8 (RWD, V8 powered, very well received) is not really fair to this thread.

Amusingly enough, two other cars that ride on the same platform and share a large amount of pieces have won car of the year.

It is amusing...but there is a significant difference (at least the Malibu vs. the G6...I have not ridden in an Aura yet). I had a G6 as a rental car...and while not bad like a Dodge Avenger...nothing to write home about. The Malibu my friend has on the other hand is quite nice and easily a match for current gen Camry's I've been in (haven't been in new accord to comment).
And it's anecdotal, 2nd hand too! Anyway, the G6 was the first iteration of that platform. Not surprising that the Aura improved on that, and the Malibu even more.

In other news, GM announced that the G8 Sport Truck ("El Camino") will have a choice of either a V6 or V8. I want it now!

One El Camino per 100 years is more than enough for everyone, that thing sucks.

I stand corrected on no 2003 GTO .. as to the gas tank being in the trunk, I will need to check into that.
Any car I buy has to be able to hold 2 golf bags. But the 2005 / 06 models are nice looking. There are some
problem areas, but nothing you can't deal with easily.

I know this woman pretty well and she's had the car long enough now to have formed some good opinions of it and she wasn't too flattering. This is a woman who works in Customer Service and has years of experience at it so I respect her opinion. I didn't give her any of my bias either, I just asked her in passing what she thought of her car now that she's had it for a while. She has the G6 coupe.

I'll take her opinion over that of some writer for a car rag who only spent a few hours testing it.

IMO the 2000 Grand Am (with the Ram Air) was nicer than the current G6.

why are we talking about the crappy G6?

the G8 GT is a bargain. $30k and 360 horses? considering how fast american cars depreciate, sign me up.

You only get the higher HP engine in the G8 GT model .. and for me, i only want a 2 door car for now.
And while $30K is not too high, I would prefer to buy a 1 or 2 year old model and save the cost of depreciation.

Not to mention that the G8 is really built by Holden (GM's Australian company) ...so there really is no correlation between the quality/reliability of a G6 and a G8.

Fair enough.

He's still going to have to take it to the Pontiac dealer for service though.

Service departments are highly dependent on the dealership. The dealerships are independently owned and if the owner or owning company doesn't put an effort into service they will be horrible for the customers.

With employee pricing a fully loaded GT comes out to around ~$27,000 that's pretty damn good for what you get.

Hell yeah!

I still greatly prefer the Auzzie styling, but it's a nice ride for a nice price, and they do look better in person than in pics. Saw a black one at the liquor store the other day, pretty nice.

I never thought I'll want to own an American car, especially a V8 at time of high gas price, and a Pontiac brand. Now I'm seriously considering this to replace my Mazda6. Good job, GM. Though I wish to replace the hood with a clean CF hood painted to body color (or unpainted if the car is black).

Dude, grab the Holden grille as well to replace that hideous Pontiac honkin nose.

Indeed, and it's an Australian car, thank you ;)
