I feel ya, jbourne77. My wife does the same thing, but even worse. We don't have any kids, so it's a little easier for us to get out.
If a buddy asks me to come watch the game or play hockey/football/pool/etc., she says 'Go' and I'll go and be happy. When I get home, she's happy that I had a good time.
If one of my wife's friends asks her to go see a movie or go to a wedding shower/etc., she makes excuses to stay home and do virtually nothing (watch TV or play card games on the PC) although I encouraged her to go out. Then she complains that her life is boring.
I know there are relatively few females on this board, but can a female (KarenMarie maybe? She posted here already) explain to me why women do this to their husbands? Do women think they're making their husband's lives better if they 'sacrifice' their own happiness? All we husbands really want is for both of us to be happy. We have a lot of fun when we go out and do things together; why can't we also have fun when we're apart?
