I've noticed that some people don't realize their desktop Ryzen 3000 CPUs are working sub-optimally (don't really idle), so I wonder how widespread the issue is.

Please, run HWInfo64, let your system idle for a little while (e.g. exit all running applications, including web browsers) and post the minimum for CPU Package Power (SMU).

Normally, for non-X570 motherboards you should be getting less than 10W.
For X570 motherboards you should be getting around 17W.

Multiple answers are allowed in case you have several systems.

If none of the chipset lanes are used with AGESA 1.0.0.4 (or newer) and the PCIe link set to maximally conserve energy the idle power usage for X570 should be comparable with previous chipsets.

Could you elaborate on "If none of the chipset lanes are used with AGESA" further? I have an NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB GPU which doesn't use PCI-E 4 but it's the only one installed and it's driving my monitor, and the setting you're referring to, "the PCIe link set to maximally conserve energy", doesn't seem to be present for my motherboard, ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi).

3700X on current X470 Taichi, 27.8W is the lowest j can see. All stock settings now other than tuned DDR4 timing.

If your CPU is not overclocked that might probably mean some BIOS or Windows settings prevent the CPU from idling properly. Your idle power consumption should be below 10W.

22W with 3900x (stock with RAM OC) but only waited like 2min but should really be enough. Isn't HWinfo itself preventing lower power states?

I dont know about now with all the changes AMD made but it used to. Right now in HWmon im using 27W with cores taking 2W on a 3600 with an all core 4.2 OC.

My idle is ~28.3W. I think the RAM tuning is upping baseline power consumption, but I'm not willing to dial it back to find out (since that idle power consumption doesn't really bother me anyway).

Ditto. I turn it off when I'm not using it anyway. My 5.2 9900KS uses like 170W more at load so I'm not exactly overly concerned with sipping power 😂

IMC power consumption increases significantly at higher RAM frequencies. I'm not sure how that affects idle power usage though, I think only LPDDR can power down significantly?

Sorry, my sentence structure was confusing crap. As long as you don't use the PCIe lanes delivered through the chipset (I sure hope you put your GPU on lanes directly from the CPU), and your AGESA version is 1.0.0.4 or newer, you can make the PCIe links in the X570 chipset reach sleep mode L1 instead L0s.
The setting for that is in the Windows power plans, open that and then open "change plan settings" next to the selection. A new window with essentially a device tree should open, with an entry for PCI Express, there you can set energy saving to the max to enable sleep mode L1. Hope this was more clear.

Thanks, moinmoin, I'll try that.

Speaking of my motherboard specifically (ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi)) - I've been able to shave off around 2W of idle CPU power consumption by changing SB Link Mode from Auto to Gen 3. Maybe I should try Gen 2 as well since I'm positive my GPU will not be meaningfully affected.

..and where exactly can I find that figure? I'm not seeing it. NM, I found it.

For my desktop system... granted it's a 2700x, not a 3-series, the SMU shows 32w...

Edit#2... with everything shut down and it just idling... 18.3w Jeepers, I'll have to play with that a bit.

What is the problem, and what would a proposed fix be?

I'm running 1usmus power plan and PBO. I'm guessing that plays a role.

If you're not concerned about your idle power consumption, then there's no problem at all. If you are, it makes sense to reveal your hardware configuration: motherboard, the BIOS settings you've changed, CPU (OC'ed or not) and whether you have NVMe SSD PCIe gen4 drives installed and then hope someone else will help you 'cause I know almost nothing about the innards of CPUs/chipsets/etc.

14w min idle power consumption, about 2x what I used to get on zen+. Idle power usage seems much worse on zen2 even though the cores are using much less power. Even low loads like watching youtube video use much more power than zen+, gaming is around the same/slightly lower on zen2 for me.

Ok I tried just sitting idle on the desktop and closed all background programs like steam and ppt went down to 5.8w somehow, too bad I never see that during normal usage.ppt.png
