Poll: Xvid or Divx

want to put a couple movies on a single dvd or laptop hdd and want to try out autogk, i own the movies, this is just for portability and not for piracy. i want to use the full resolution of the dvd which i think is 720x480 and these will be played on a laptop, so just stereo sound.

which codec would you use?

I don't really care... I just wish all the encoders could get together and decide on a standardized format for video. it's an f'ing pain.

xvid, fair use. quality is for all intents and purposes the same. its recompressing compressed video anyways.

I'm purely an Xvid user, but I voted Divx simply because it's supposedly much faster. For your purposes, the differences between the two codecs is fairly insignificant, aside from the fact that Divx is a proprietary commercial codec and the encoder comes with adware that you have to disable with a small registry edit (or, at least it did the last time I downloaded it).

I use XVid because the FairUse proggy is easier to use (to me) than AutoGK.

Really? I use AutoGK and I recently bought FairUse but haven't taken the time to try to use it... AutoGK seems very simple, don't know how much easier it can get 😛

how much time does it usually take to encode a movie to xvid/divx? - 2.8c@3.15/1GB Ram

I'd say around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the settings you choose.

ok, since it appeas that autogk has spyware in it, what would you all use? fair use? any spyware?

Nope. And I love it. Linky

thanks d/l and will try 🙂 looks like the the lite version is exactly what i am looking at, but hey if it works like they say i might just buy the full version for a job well done 🙂

how does dr divx compare?

I've used Dr. Divx before and for simplicity, it's awesome. Very very very simple to use. I've also used programs like FlaskMPEG (MUCH more complex than programs like Dr. DivX). I don't have any experience with Fair Use, but if you're going from DVD to XviD or DivX then it can't hurt to give it a try 🙂

damn, just finished up with fair use and it is damn clear, although the video is just 584x240. i will bump it up tonight to something closer to 720x480 as this ratio is very wide, but the quality is excellent for a 2 hour movie that is only ~700MB.

divx might not be free but I use it since it's more likely to be supported in things like dvd players (like the dvp 642!) and I don't like the video quality of xvid. maybe i'm crazy but I think it makes video look like vhs!
