Kerry will vote no on an admendment, or so he says, he likes to flip-flop on issues, but he does NOT support gay marriage.

What they do behind closed doors is their business. True I wouldn't exactly enjoy seeing them frolicking about hand in hand

My main question is how would gay marriage be beneficial? Does it mean gay couples that marry each other love each other more than those that aren't married? Do they think marriage would validate their relationship in any significant way?

Or do they just want all the insurance benefits that are traditionally afforded to married couples?

Exactly. The only benefit is financial. Why dont gay people just say they are married otherwise.

My question: why does the government need to make marriage a legal thing? Why cannot marriage be a religious thing and have a civil union for legal purposes? I'm talking about everyone here - including heterosexual couples.

Leave the government out of our religions.

Note: I realize this doesn't answer the question "should gay civil unions be allowed", but it certainly takes the emotions out of this debate.

Marriage is not tied to religion. Many cultures have marriages as institutions, but not Christian as a religion. Are you saying that their marriages should be null and voided as well? How about athiests who get married? And why is Christian marriage better than any other marriage?
