I got my 16gb nexus 7 a couple days ago from best buy. My Asus tf101 is already on ebay.

The speed of the nexus 7 and jellybean 4.1 is incredible. It makes my Android 4.0.3 tf101 seem slow and laggy in comparison.

Everything runs super smoothly. Browsing is an absolute joy on this thing. It's so much better than competing products (Amazon Kindle fire, blackberry playbook). Other 7" tablets are basically obsolete.

Build quality is very good. I have virtually no backlight bleed and what little there is is unnoticeable on anything but an all black background.

The screen does have a bit of flex on the top left side in portrait mode, but only if you push hard - substantially harder than you'd ever need to press a touchscreen. Touch performance is unaffected. All in all, I'm extremely happy with mine. It makes a fabulous e-reader and Web browser.

I regret buying the Nexus 7. It doesn't work on many public wifi's due to the way it communicates with routers and servers. Mine will be resold soon.

Usually if the network is open but requires a landing login page? I think that's the issue.

My only issue .. out of the box, it doesn't read Ad Hoc wireless networks. I can't tether MyWi from my iPhone.

Most Android tablets have trouble connecting to Ad Hoc networks. You usually have to root and edit the config to make it work. I never ran into that issue because all my Android phones create infrastructure mode network when wifi tethering. So any and all devices can connect seamlessly.

If Asus can make a 7" tablet with high end hardware for $200, why does a 4.5" smartphone cost $600?

higher dpi screens are more expensive
compact packaging is more expensive
cellular basebands are more expensive
antennas are more expensive.
design/engineering/testing costs are more expensive

and last but most important: the nexus 7 is a loss leader, they're selling it close to cost. the $600 for a mobile phone includes a healthy profit margin for the manufacturer and all the middlemen.

interesting. ive had to use fing with the full hostname to ping a device from 2.3, but have never had an issue connecting to wifi *anywhere* with my phone but i dont think ive had to connect to anything that required a portal, either. my 2.2 phone connected to wifi with portals without issue.

go figure....hope that damn transformer im getting doesnt have that problem :Q

Next Kindle Fire's specs haven't been announced, nor is there any time frame for it. But, it will almost certainly be running Amazon's forked and neutered version of Android. If you want a full tablet OS, go with the N7.

Didn't think about the gimped Android.. N7 it is.

Worth it if you already have a Galaxy Nexus + iPad 3?

EDIT: Nevermind. I couldn't deal with screen detach issues, or the chance I'd get a dead pixel and no easy way to return it.

Umm. You could return it if you wanted to. I don't think anyone had that problem.
I received 3 Nexus 7s and all of them are pristine with no defects.

A number of people at Ars recommended it as a nice supplement to their iPads FWIW.

Not to mention a phone is almost a neccessity.
Most everyone has to have a phone so they are able to sell it for a healthy profit.
A tablet is a luxury. Nobody needs to have one.

Official AnandTech review by Anand and Brian

The screen isn't big enough for everyone, but if you're fine with (or better yet, really want) a 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7 is great. It's well built, has good hardware and is priced perfectly. The only downside is really the limited (and not expandable) internal storage. The lack of expandable storage keeps the Nexus 7 from winning a higher level accolade, but the rest of the package is enough to earn our bronze Editor's Choice award.

The Nexus 7 isn't just a great Android tablet, it's a great tablet.

Nah I am happy with my iPad thank you….😎

I have an ipad2. Too big, slippery, heavy and not at all convenient for me to read books. Sure it's good if I want to play games and email (although I absolutely hate the way the left menu shows up). I have the Nexus 7 and can do all of those things and absolutely love it.

I haven't had a problem yet connecting anywhere with wifi. It works fine at home, at work, at Starbucks.

Was looking at the Nexus and ended up splurging for the Transformer Infinity instead. It's twice as much but you get HDMI out, microSD, an arguably better screen, docking options and a faster processor out of it. Funny thing is I wouldn't have considered it if it weren't for the Nexus 7 so it's definitely functioning as a great halo device.

Been trying to get one for the past week+. Finally ordered one from RadioShack last night, was surprised they showed "In Stock". Order went through successfully, however order's still showing "Processing" today, but hopefully that's because its a weekend and it'll sort through by Monday morning. Got my fingers crossed, 'cause I really really want one!

i was in a holiday inn express over the weekend, and both gnex and n7 worked fine with the free internet login page.
