*POLL* Will AOL ever lose its negative image (to those in the know)?

Ask yourself this first - will AOL ever lose its corny point-and-click image? Probably not 🙂

Put my vote in as a big fat NO

Not as long as they continue to cater to the lowest common denominator of the Internet using public.
I guess that would be the "I-Don't-Know" crowd. 😛

Why does what "people in the know" think? It rarely matters in ANY subject. There are millions out there who are 100% happy with paying $4.95 a month to communicate with the grandchildren or relatives who live far away. It is because of AOL that that is possible. If AOL were to resign today millions out there would be denied that privilege, while a very small fraction would be somewhat satisfied. What ever "negative" they've done should be offset by Steve Case and them have done to the world, opening the door to the next frontier. Bad things or not, you have to respect that...

The division between people will always exist... the intelligent advanced users, and the perpetual newbies.

AOL is an interesting breed... a mirror of Microsoft in most respects, and yet wants to take down MS... a business model is of the average joe using the product, releasing hella buggy software, and attempt to kill competition.

They have succeeded in that the average joe uses their service... just as Windows 9X has allowed the average joe use a computer. And in the process, killed Netscape more than Microsoft did. They butchered ICQ into something I won't touch anymore. Their reign of terror hasn't done anything to Winamp just yet, but its just a matter of time.

AOL is the embodiment of evil...

"AOL is an interesting breed... a mirror of Microsoft in most respects, and yet wants to take down MS..."

Really? Did AOL start making OS's and word processing programs? And for a company trying to take the other down, it sure is odd that AOL is on the Windows desktop and IE comes with AOL's CDs.

"a business model is of the average joe using the product...They have succeeded in that the average joe uses their service..."

That's a great concept, producing software people use, those scums!

"releasing hella buggy software, and attempt to kill competition."

Well they were one of if not they first ISP to be nation wide (back in '85), and their service is like non-other. Back in my early days of the internet I used AOL and learned a whole lot from it. Does ANY other service provide a menu with everything you could want right on your screen?

"And in the process, killed Netscape more than Microsoft did."

Well first of all if you don't remember AOL used to package Netscape with their CDs. And no one killed Netscape, Netscape killed themselves. Unless some AOL execs came into Netscpae HQ and started to poison some of their programmers, Netscape is responsible for the below par browsers they produce (my page looks like crap under it and usually won't load). The ratio of IE 5 users to Netscape 5 users is about 3-1/2-1, which is just about right considering their functionalities.

"They butchered ICQ into something I won't touch anymore."

I'll send you an old version if you'd like...

"Their reign of terror hasn't done anything to Winamp just yet, but its just a matter of time."

Geez you're talking about this like it's communism or something, a little paranoid there? If you're so inclined to NOT use software just because of the company behind it, then so do so, but to those who just care about the quality of the products and to see if it does it's functions (Winamp plays and will ALWAYS play music, ICQ will ALWAYS be able to send/receive messages now with MANY more options), AOL and MS have done little wrong...

Damn.
"Alot Of Losers"?
"Idiocy breeds"???

Some of you people are harsh, and IMO have overinflated sense of self-worth.

AOL may be obnoxious and annoying to those 'in-the-know,' but that doesn't make it bad in itself. If computer novices want to use it for their needs and it makes them happy - great! Let them be...damn. 🙁
