Right now it looks like John Edwards to garner the southern vote or Wesley Clark to woo the "strong military" crowd. VP choices are never selected for any reason other than to gather votes in perceived weak areas.

Dean and Hilary Clinton are not realistic choices as they bring nothing to the table and would probably hurt Kerry's ticket as they are too polarizing. I think you need to add Wes Clark and Gephardt and Richardson. Clark to compliment Kerry's military record and to perhaps compete in the South i.e. Arkansas. Gephardt to perhaps pick up Missouri and compete in Ohio. Richardson to pick up NM and compete in Nevada and Arizona and elsewhere.
Another Republican choice that has been mentioned is former Maine Senator and Clinton Defense Sec. William Cohen.
Of that list, I would suspect that Kerry would offer McCain the spot but I doubt McCain would accept unless he was 100% positive that Kerry would win (this would require serious polling data). I get the feeling that McCain does not like GWB but I don't know if that is enough for him to jump. Edwards would be the logical and "safest" choice.
Personally, I like the choices in bold, especially General Clark or former SoD Cohen. I met Secretary Cohen twice and think highly of him.[...]
Congressional and other Democrats have urged Kerry to move quickly. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters Friday that he should pick a vice presidential candidate by May 1.
[...]
Potential running mates most often mentioned by Democrats interviewed by The Associated Press are:
_North Carolina Sen. John Edwards.
_Bob Kerrey. The former Nebraska governor and senator is, like Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Though he has impressed many with his work on the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks, Kerrey has said he's not interested in joining the ticket. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark (news - web sites) would also burnish the ticket's military credentials.
_Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
_William Cohen.
_Virginia Gov. Mark Warner.
_New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
_Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.
_Rep. Dick Gephardt

There are reports that Kerry is in discussions now with McCain on this.

But on the show he said he had no interest in being VP to anyone... I personally don't want him to be, polls show Edwards to be his best choice for beating Bush, Edwards is a very charismatic man and has great character, he is instantly likeable I've heard from many voters, and was my alternative choice to Kerry. I hope Kerry will chose Edwards.. Kerry would have the best chance at beating Bush then.
