Cancer is like the russian roulette of life. It could hit you, it could hit the guy next to you, or your mom, or your dad. A cure would be a very good thing. I don't know what a cure for cancer would be, some sort of cell farms that can be used to replace your cells?

Cancer. It's something FAR more difficult to cure and something that we're all likely to have in some form or another at some point in our lives. AIDS, on the other hand, can be pretty much elimited naturally by simply not f#%$ing other people.

If we were to be cloned before cancer strikes, would the cancer have the same exact chances of appearing in our clone ? This would indicate cancer is a genetic defect in our personal make-up, no ? Is it considered that now ?

Cancer is a combination of nature vs. nurture.

Ummm... what? Cancer is nature and genetics. It's a natural process gone haywire. That's why it's so difficult to cure.

So the answer to my question is the clone will not necessarily have the same cancer or at all even if the original person develops it later.

Sounds like a good deal. What if you're cloned while you have cancer (not sure how cloning works, but isn't it just the DNA they take)?

Exactly. I was going to be p1ssed if AIDS beat cancer.

I know of people who have/had cancer, but none with AIDS. Plus, doesn't cancer affect more people?

AIDS, on the sole basis that the greater understanding of the human immune system that would result
from AIDS research could lead to breakthroughs in treatment of many other diseases and conditions
including cancer.

There are many different types of cancer...but it seems like the best way to stop it all together would be to some how force your body's immune system to attack the cancer cells. Not an easy task since cancer is made out of your cells...and your body obviously isn't designed to attack itself. Which incidently, would likely be close to what a cure for aids would be as well.

But I'm not a biologist...I'm just drawing on hearsay from various sources, including my biologist girlfriend.

Early stage cancer is a localized phenomon, though after that it can of course spread to other parts. If it was of the kind caused by a genetic predisposition, then it wouldn't matter where in the body the DNA was extracted from, there would exist the same chance of developing it later on. If it was taken from the cancerous region, the cells contain the damaged DNA, there is a good chance I would think of the clone developing it as well. Of course in what form that might take I have no idea. Somehow I'm thinking it would be totally inviable and would never make it past the fetus stage. Though I can't say with certainity. In addition, you seem to be postulating that cloning is a way around cancer of some kind, but you have to realize that the clone will possess none of the memories of the original. It would be just another person, like you had an identical twin a few decades apart. Cloning wouldn't be much good in this case aside from organ harvesting.

I agree with you on this subject. You have to blame yourself if you get Aids you can prevent it but Cancer sucks. I think cancer also affects far more families then Aids does.

My thoughts exactly. I am far far far more likely to get cancer than AIDS.

Yes, it is genetic. Cancer is by definition a genetic disorder. That doesn't mean a problem of inheritence or similar necessarily, just of genes. Cancer is basically cellular division run amok due to mutations or mutating viruses.

There are some forms or causes of cancer which include an inherited predisposition, such as a lack of tumor supressor genes, as well.
