Hopkins has crap for a history department. If you PM me with what sort of history you want to study, i might be able to help. They don't even have that wonderful of an econ department.

I won't vote, because everything is determined by what you want to study. If you tell us all that, specifically, and where it might change, we could be of more service i think.

Johns Hopkins University

just in case your party too much and passed out or something, there's always the best hospital in the world around the corner.

toant, lol, however that thought actually crossed into my head when I was weighing all of this stuff. If there is ever a place to get drunk and know you are in good hands it is definately Hopkins. Although Columbia is pretty good in that regard.

JHU is a great school, but only sub-par for what you want to study. Brandeis has a very very good liberal arts program, something you should consider if you're into writing and history and such

I just found out today that Brandeis is offering me the 10K a year Dean's Scholarship, making it 12K a year cheaper than Hopkins. Let that factor into your thoughts however you want

<< hehe.. anywhere but UCI. Nothing to do here on the weekends. >>

WHAT?! You guys are located in So. Cal. If you have a car, you can get anywhere. Not like here in Davis, I gotta drive to sac for any kind of mall. Drive to Frisco if I want anything else.

Wow, I can't believe people haven't heard of Rutgers University. I guess being from New Jersey I can't help but know Rutgers. (I'm just assuming this, since a lot of people said they had only heard of John Hopkins).

Anyways, if you got the scholarship from Brandeis, go there ... You're not too far out of Boston which I hear is a really nice 'college town' .. Hopkins is a good school, has a good reputation but I dont know ... I dont like Baltimore all that much!

You really need to go visit both schools and get a feel for which school you'd prefer to live at. Thats what it came down to for me. I liked my school's campus/atmosphere the best. In my opinion, it doesnt matter so much what school you goto, as what you make of it while you're there. And while having a big name Ivy League type school on your resume is impressive, and will usually help you get your foot in the door... good job references and good interviewing skills seem to weigh in more (at least in my experience). This is especially true after your first job when they have more to go on other than just your undergrad.

But everyone's opinion on what is important in a school is different... I think education wise, you'll get a good education at either Hopkins or Brandeis, so make the decision based on where you'd rather live.

LiQiCE, I visited both and I liked both. I posed this question right after I got back from Johns Hopkins, hoping for some outside insights on both Hopkins and Brandeis and a poll to see general opinion. Frankly I am surprised so few people either know about Brandeis or consider it a viable option.

And who has been voting for Yeshiva University? :)

I voted for JHU but Brandeis is also great especially with a scholarship.
I know people who are go to are are going to go to both those schools. I know the person at JHU really likes it.

I actually know a couple people who were accepted to an Ivy or two, but were regected from Brandeis :Q

i voted for brandeis... great math department. (math major). anyways, i guess the most famous school is john's hopkins. but i hear the college itself is quite boring. the college you mentions are all pretty famous but i've never heard of the y one. so i would seriously look into finding a college which offers the program you're most interested in and go there. also, look at the environment you want to be around. boston u provides the best city life probably, but probably the lowest education from those choices.

graduating in 6 weeks from ucla!!! whoo hoo

well

speaking from someone at

Boston University,

thats where I voted.

I also got into Brandeis but decided that I didn't like the feel of the campus. My cousin goes there and while she appreciates the education, she says that the campus is very competitive and not that friendly.

Hopkins I didn't apply to b/c I thought that it was very stuck up and Baltimore seemed without much to do.

Rutgers, I don't know a ton about,

and Yeshiva is a great school but only if you know what you want for sure.

I haven't had any problems with getting lost in the shuffle at BU, its amazing how small it seems sometimes.

as to the top 30 education, you'd be surprised how little that matters, BU is a great school from which to get into a grad school, it is grad school name recognition that is important. Personally, I am part of a 5 year program that lets me leave with a BA/MA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology/Biotechnology. I plan on getting a PhD somewhere else. Maybe University of Chicago.

Brandeis made up your mind for you. Take the 12 K per year for the same/better education, especially if you are even considering studying Yiddish. A lot of Hopkins name recognition comes from their Medical School and Lacrosse team, neither of which seems like are of importance to you.

Thanks for the opinion ben. I know that the money definately swings the scale in Brandeis' favor, although I still want to hear people's thoughts because this is such an important decision. Brandeis gets some points because ElFenix recomends Hopkins and judging by his posts in the Berkely thread, he is the type of person that I do NOT want to encounter much in college. I heard the Arabs at Hopkins mailed everyone in the school flyers saying "IT'S THE OCCUPATION STUPID!!!" They also screen all these films that try and portray the Israelis as monsters, which they are definately not. That is one thing that definately hinders Hopkins standing in my mind.

I am really surprised almost no one knows of Yeshiva University. I thought it is one of the most well-known schools in the East. It is definately the most prestigious University for Modern Orthodox Jews as it is always in the USNews top 50.

It means, ElFenix, that I greatly dislike your Palestinaian sympathizer-like comments in the various Middle East threads. I feel that it is worth posting because your post is weighing into my college choice and I am trying to keep people updated with my thinking, so it is valid for me to post that. Don't want it posted, then stop making your biased comments like when Israel successfully kills a terrorist mastermind you say "All it means is more dead people" showing a real lack of knowledge of the real situation or an unwillingness to see Israel's right to act how they acted.

1stly i've never been to baltimore, let alone johns hopkins, and most of my info is about the med school and the fact that a rather good professor that i took a class from xfered there, so i think you're weighting my opinion a bit too much.

2nd do i really come off as liking the palestinians? are you denying that when the israeli military kills a terrorist that there are more dead people than there were the day before? or perhaps you're denying the palestinians humanity? i can see that as far as the terrorists go. i'm more expressing my cynicism of the situation, any hope for future peace, and a weariness at the constant cycle of violence. i do take the things that both sides say with a grain of salt, so if thats pro-palestinian, i guess i'm guilty.

wow... i'm surprised how few votes Rutgers got. We all know John Hopkins is a great college, but Rutgers is a very highly recognized school.

i personally goto UT @ austin, but if money wasn't an option, i would definitely pick Rutgers out of that list... it also depends heavily on what major u decide to go into tho

Hopkins. Choose your college for the education and pedigree, not the dorms, the food, the closeness to home, or any other such bs. Those things are temporary, but your degree lasts forever. You want the words on that degree to be worth something in the long run. Of your choices, Hopkins is best in that respect.

The only caveat: visit Hopkins first, take the tour, and make sure it's not hate at first site. You don't want to spend four years at a place you hate, regardless how good it is.
