This is going to sound dumb, but nVidia cards look more clean to me for some odd reason. I am sure there is no difference irl...it has to be a mental thing.

I dunno. I've seen evidence of minor framerate fluctuations on ATi cards that might account for a different "feel" between the two. In the past nvidia cards have felt somehow indefinably smoother to me than ATi, but it's not as noticeable in this latest generation of cards. Also, with ATi implementing things like Catalyst AI and Nvidia using whatever their equivalent is, which can actually change the appearance of the games slightly, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a barely noticeable difference.

Currently Nvidia(7900GS--friend letme borrow indefinately), but will be going ATI soon(4770). No particular reason, I just prefer ATI/AMD.

Nvidia currently, but in future probably ATI. It all depends on when a game comes out that I want to play, and who makes the fastest card.

ATI now. Nvidia worked fine until I needed fixed aspect ratio scaling that worked on my monitor...once ATI FINALLY got it working I swapped out and never looked back.

They both make competitive products and its PATHETIC how much trouble they BOTH had getting a feature that is invaluable in an age of painfully common widescreen monitors working in their drivers. But the fact that I couldn't ever get nvidia's implementation to work despite tons of tweaking was enough for me to be done with them. It works for most people, and since it took them like a year after they broke it for everyone to finally fix it I'm not holding my breath. Until I get a confirmed report that their latest driver works with exactly my monitor and OS, I won't even consider them.

I don't know about the smooth feeling but my X800 definitely had better IQ than my 7900GT, on the other hand I hate ATI's drivers and CCC.

Currently gaming on an ATI.

Maybe I should go in there and see if I can't alter that ratio a little.

WTF, you can mix and match them? I would have held on to my 4870 if I knew that. (Although, I would need a new mobo.)

EDIT: I guess you can't do 4870 + 4890, I misread your post.

You can run a 4870 and a 4890 in Crossfire. The faster card will be dumbed down to work like a mirror to the slower card though. If you have a 4870 512MB and a 4890 1GB in Crossfire, it will function like having two 4870 512MB cards.

I have an ATI 4870... nice card.

ATI/nVidia makes no difference to me, I get what I think is the best performance/money ratio, and even then don't fret over it too long. Drivers have never been an issue for me for either company.

8800GT I got last summer for $140, price > brand loyalty any day of the week when it comes to video cards!

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256 MB. Laptop is my one and only computer (college), so it's general use. Primarily gaming/media (laptop triples as my TV and DVD player). Not that I can play most modern games. :p

Damn. I wish I knew that. I wouldn't have minded playing with it. I am sure a dumbed down 4790+4870 > 4790...lol

9650M GT in this laptop, 8800GT in my old desktop (maybe I'll get around to dumping a dual core in there eventually - it's kind of a lopsided system). I still mostly use graphics power for gaming, but I have started watching a lot more TV shows and stuff lately on the machine.

The best graphics card for the price varies on a monthly basis (sometimes a weekly or even a daily basis). In just the past month, the following things have significantly affected the best value video cards:

- The Radeon 4830 was discontinued and it's no longer readily available, so the GeForce 9600GT is now the best you can get for $70-$80.
- The Radeon 4850 dropped in price significantly to ~$90, making it a much better deal than the similarly-performing GTS 250, which still costs ~$120.
- The GTX 260 dropped to around $160 and is now a much better deal than the similar Radeon 4870, which remains in the $180-$190 range.
- The Radeon 4870 is being squeezed from the other end by the 4890, which is practically the same price if you wait for a good deal to come along. At the same time, the GTX 275 performs every bit as well as the 4890 and which one is better basically comes down to price.

In another month, things will be different again as the Radeon 4770 becomes more widespread and might drop in price. nVidia may respond to it by dropping the price on the GTS 250 or something. The graphics landscape changes so frequently that you just have to look at your own budget and buy what makes sense at the moment. As such, I'm not really more loyal to one company or the other. I just happened to buy both my current graphics card and the previous one at times when ATI was on top. If I were to buy one now, though, I'd probably get one of those discounted GTX 260s.

You also have to consider that some games run a lot better on one brand than the other. And there are other factors that appeal to certain people, like nVidia with CUDA, stereoscopic, and Linux support, or ATI with more flexible multi-GPU support and better audio over HDMI.
