In a relationship, both parties have a say on what happens to the others body. There absolutely has to be discussion on what happens in a situation like this.

In my GF's case she would have to choose between keeping a child created by rape until birth and giving it up for adoption, and losing me, or keeping me and getting rid of an egg (that most likely isn't fertilized).

I don't understand how she can be your SO if you have such radically differing idealogies.

Regardless, I probably wouldn't even be there to make that decision with her, because as soon as we realize she's going ot be ok, I'd be on a manhunt with a rusty knife to prevent any future occurances of this particular situation for anyone else ever again.

I think my GF and I are very good at communicating with each other and are quite respectful of each others beliefs. (she's a hardcore catholic and I'm agnostic).

We do have our disagreements, but ultimately we tend to resolve them. For something like this, I think at the moment our resolution has become "lets just hope this situation never comes up".

One of the things I like about my GF is she has taken kickboxing, judo, and many self defense classes. She knows how to fight and defend herself. I'd feel sorry for any guy who tried anything on her (unless he had a gun - in which case, martial arts doesn't really help)

God forbid if my wife was ever raped I would stand by her whatever decisions she makes regarding it.

Exactly. If she truely was your SO you'd stand by her.

thank you ... at least a couple people on this board have some feelings

A relationship isn't a dictatorship. It's one thing to support your SO after she was raped. It's another thing to be forced to support the illegitimate child of a criminal for the rest of your life. When you are in a marriage or similar relationship, major decisions such as having children need to be made jointly with both parties on board.

unless i completely misread the OP...even if she does have the baby she's giving it up for adoption...in which case there ins't too much of a burden on you except for providing some emotional support to your SO...in addition if she was keeping the baby for herself...i still think that i would stick by if that was her decision...though i can understand that you would want to have more of a say if that was indeed the case.

I'd say unless you're faced with the situation, why worry about it? A lot of people like to make up situations like these, and worry themselves sick about it. Even asking the question, someone who writes how they would react actually put themselves in an imaginary position, had an emotion about it, and then wrote. Emotion about something that hasn't even happened.. interesting.

Voted that I'd leave her in both cases, though it's a fairly improbable scenario - I doubt I'd ever date someone who felt the opposite of me on something with a very real possibility of directly and personally affecting us both, and I see nothing wrong with abortion.

Yeah, I bet so few people ever experience something like that...

Not to mention her voluntarily choosing to put her life on the line for a rapist...because in every pregnancy there can be complications.

If she doesn't want to give up a fertilized egg, who is to say that she would want to give up a baby that she spent 9 months bonded to?

So single mothers are completely off-limits for dating/marrying?

Man, you have the weirdest polls. I mean they're just odd to the point where I have to wonder if you have some repressed problems deep inside. Does anybody else notice that too?

No, of course not.You know what you are getting into from the get go.In the other situation she is willing to sacrifice her health, future and your relationship for what...A child conceived by rape. Not even a child..an embryo at most.

I have no idea what I would do. I would NEVER want to be in that situation. I love my SO and if anyone took advantage of her, I'd kill them.

Who said anything about making Stefan pay? If she is giving the baby up for adoption, great. Kudos to her for not taking the life of an innocent child.
