Poll:What target framerate will satisfy your needs in D3 and HL2?

As long as we're dreaming, I aim for 60+fps average for the suspension of disbelief (and, um, playability). So 60-80 is my target range, but likely not one I'll see on this 9100. 🙂

Maybe next year on a Prescott or Opteron and an R450 will get me 1024X768 60 to 70 fps.

You did a repost of your previous one 8 minutes later!?? What for!?

Personally I'm gunning for 60fps, no AA or AF on.

Perfectly happy with 40+ fps.

I am the kind of person to run my GeForce II GTS into the ground with 1600x1200 on Serious Sam at like 25fps or something....

What I'd really want is 60fps minimum at 1280x960x32@85Hz Full AA+AF. What will satisfy me will be 30fps minimum at 1280x960x32@85Hz NO AA+AF.

I'd be very happy with that. The important thing is I don't want to get into areas where the frame rate drops down too far. Nothing worse than the game turning into a slideshow when there's a bunch of action on the screen.

Other then the new 9800 TX, what new cores are planned that should dramatically increase Dx9 framerates? A realistic time period I hope.

From what Anand states, A 9700 pro can run HL2 1024 x768 @ 70+ FPS. That is more than enough for me. And I'm hoping just by how the game is programmed that AA/AF won't make much of an impact on performance. I have to have at least 2x AA Quality on during a FPS.

Yeah, sorry about the double post.

I posted this and the page was taking forever to reload. And like a newb I hit the post button again. (DOH!!)

Out of curiosity though, are we being realistic about what our current hardware will do, or are we just talking pure fantasy/wish list stuff here?

Cuz if it's fantasy / wishlist then I want to have frame rates like Q3A @ 1600X1200 with everything maxed and full IQ, on my current rig.

But if we're being realistic then I stand by my original post. I don't expect to hit 100 plus FPS, high rez and high AA/AF, on the HL2 or D3 engine based games for another 2 to 3 years.

Same here.
Although i voted the 31-40fps option, cos thats still perfectly playable in my books.

NV40- Q1 '04

R400- Summer '04(the actual R400, not the R390 that people are calling the R420)

For more mild performance boosts, there is the Radeon9800XT and the NV38 on the way(soonish- both could 'launch' within a few weeks), but neither of them will offer a dramatic speed up(dramatic to me is ~50% or so). I would expect the NV40 and R400 to be actual full DX9 parts(complete speculation mind you) with full PS/VS3.0 support.

no hope of reaching anything above 20-30 frames - r8500lele 😉

but as soon hl2 is out i´m in for an upgrade
i thought i´d go with a 9600pro, but by the time hl2 will be out
next generation cards from both ati and nvidia will be available,
so 9800pros should be priced lower - hopefully
i live in austria, ati cards are quite expensive here..... what a shame ;(

well, if you average 60 and drop to 50 and get a high of 70 that's better than average of 80 and drop to 30 and high of 90.

Because that drop is during firefight and the high is when you hit that dead end wall.

100+ FPS / Everything on: 6x FSAA/8x FSAA and 16x AF @ 1600 x 1200. Unfortunately, this will not happen.. (unless I do something far-fetched. *coughs* Kryogenic Cascade Chiller) 🙁

HL2 is coming out in probably a month or two (before the end of the year). There will be no reason for the 9800 Pro to drop much in the next couple of months - it won't even be competing with the higher priced 9800XT.

HL2 is still coming out on the 30th.
Every store i visit says Sep30th.
My lastest issue of PC-Zone UK, has an interview with Gabe Newell, and hes confirming the Sep30th release date.
from PC-Zone UK Issue 134 November 2003
......And although i`d been specifically warned off the subjedt by a friendly PR person ("Mention anything about the release data and your interview will be terminated immediatly"), I decided to take the direct approach.
"So, September 30th then?"
"Yep"
"Definately September 30th?"
"Uh-huh"
"And the release date for HL2?"
"September 30th"
"And the games going to be released on..."
"It hasnt changed since you asked me 10 seconds ago!"

well... looking on my current system, I'll try as hard as possible to get it run above 30fps.
hmmm, maybe 800x600 with details normal.. or minimum?

You're gonna buy D3? lol.

HL2 yes, D3 can go suck an egg.

fanboy

lol. Nah, I just can't stand Id games.

That marine has shot sooo many zombies he must be bored as hell by now. They've been making the same game with better engines since Doom. That's all they ever make....Doom.

Anything over 30fps is fine. You never hear anyone whine that GTA:VC is locked at 30fps max.

I usually disable the framerate limiter myself.

No point in running it at 30fps when I can get double that even with my 9100 (it looks alot smoother).

I'll be quite happy if I can pull 30fps in HL2 with my box though, but I'm not holding out much hope. 🙂

Funny, When I disabled it my screen went black.
