Mice are really one of those things that need hands on treatement. I like the logitech optical mouse because I'm 6'6 and I have big hands. Logitech makes really big mice with nice form fitting designs. I find the Intellieye to be a bit smaller and the boomslang really funky. The whole optical argument is sorta old. As far as I've found from my own tests, the only difference you will recieve going from ball to optical is you will always have that nice control you get from right after you clean out your mouseball. Yes I play games and I don't have a problem with tracking. I use a crazy sensitivity in Quake1 (Sens 15 with logitech drivers installed and pushed up high), a slight twitch of my wrist will send me 180 degrees. I've also tried a low sens though, to the point where I had to keep lifting the optical mouse up to turn, not a problem.
I think the biggest issues with optical mice are what kind of surfaces you put them on, how fast the rubber feet wear off, and making sure no dust gets on the lens. Dust on the lens equals very random cursor movement. Different surfaces can cause different problems, should stick with an all black, plastic mousepad (such as the everglide or ratpad). The rubber feet wearing off is by far the most annoying because the mouse may begin to scratch against surfaces.
