<< But I hear Optical mouses suk for "twitch" gamers like me. >>

Doesn't happen unless you are one of those people who set their mouse speed/acceleration to the slowest settings. I used to worry about that also, but my logitech optical wheel has yet to twitch even once in any FPS. The logitech optical wheels are GREAT for price/performance. I've tried the MS opticals, and they were ok, but seemed overpriced.

I have the Intellimouse Explorer. It's big, but actually works pretty good in my FPS games

<< That noise about "quick-twitching" and all that is just that, noise. All real gamers have no problem using a better system. >>

I must be imagining it then. Thanks for clearing that up.

I haven't tried the newest optical mice, but I have an MS Intellimouse Explorer at home and I can't use it because it does "twitch". I play FPS games with the sensitivity way down. I was thinking of trying the 2nd generation Logitech to see if the problem was fixed.

serial Logitech First Pilot Mouse all the way. I tried also the Intellimouse Optical but then no more HEAD SHOTs in UT. So back to good ol' logitech mouse.

My intellimouse Explorer works fine for me in UT. I never get the skipping people are talking about.

I could give a frogs fat a$$ which mouse technically is the far superior device. I have the Intellimouse explorer and the Logitech Optical Mouseman wheel but I like my Razer 2000. I guess I must be one of those stupid people that cherrypez has described. Darn, I always wanted to be a gaming GOD and get all the perks that come with it: chicks, money & power.Oh well I guess ill just stick to being a plain old gamer wanna-be.

Mice are really one of those things that need hands on treatement. I like the logitech optical mouse because I'm 6'6 and I have big hands. Logitech makes really big mice with nice form fitting designs. I find the Intellieye to be a bit smaller and the boomslang really funky. The whole optical argument is sorta old. As far as I've found from my own tests, the only difference you will recieve going from ball to optical is you will always have that nice control you get from right after you clean out your mouseball. Yes I play games and I don't have a problem with tracking. I use a crazy sensitivity in Quake1 (Sens 15 with logitech drivers installed and pushed up high), a slight twitch of my wrist will send me 180 degrees. I've also tried a low sens though, to the point where I had to keep lifting the optical mouse up to turn, not a problem.

I think the biggest issues with optical mice are what kind of surfaces you put them on, how fast the rubber feet wear off, and making sure no dust gets on the lens. Dust on the lens equals very random cursor movement. Different surfaces can cause different problems, should stick with an all black, plastic mousepad (such as the everglide or ratpad). The rubber feet wearing off is by far the most annoying because the mouse may begin to scratch against surfaces.

<< If you like cleaning crap out of your mouse and buying expensive mousepads then get a regular mouse. >>

Anyone who has to clean the rollers on their ball mice often is obviously doing something wrong. I've had a Logitech Mouseman+ ball mouse for over two years, and I've only had to clean it once. Once! How do I do it? Preventative maintenance. First, I use a simple fabric mousepad with a wrist rest that keeps my skin off the mousing surface, so no skin oil gets in my mouse. Second, I take a lint roller to my mouse pad every two weeks or so. That's it. My Mouseman+ works every bit as well as it did when I first got it. And the one time I did clean it was not because the rollers were too dirty to use it, but because there was just a small buildup that I found after not checking it for a while.

The best gaming mouse I ever used was the Razer Boomslang 2000, bar none. It's accurate as hell and heavy enough that you can keep a good line with little effort. The only problem with it is that the buttons are so low/sensitive that after a month or so of use, they start to stick. Mine is currently toast due to this and I now have a Logitech optical (BTW, the same company makes the optical device for both MS and LT, but the LT is way cheaper). It's pretty good, but sometimes when I lift it during frag sessions I get pointed in a random direction - not usually a problem unless there's lava around, and I've taken a few hot baths that have really PMO! ;)

Right now, I'm waiting for a replacement mouse from Razer but it sounds like that might take a while (ie: forever). :( The Razer web site seems to be business as usual. It even has links to a new product (the Mamba). The only glaring difference is that the "support" link leads back to the main page... </hope>

I guess what I'm getting at is that the Razer is the best mouse around for gaming IMHO, but use caution when you get one (they appear to be available) because the company is definitely in trouble.

My MS Intellimouse Optical is great. It exhibits none of the problems rumored about optical mice and its the perfect shape.

experience cursor jumping with my intellimouse explorer and that is AFTER switching to 33% faster model. think it had to do with my desk surface and not mouse though.

120hz is too slow IMHO... Gimme a regular old PS/2 mouse (preferably Logitech wingman or mouseman) with a 200hz refresh rate. I've tried the optical mice on a USB port and I can't stand the skipping it does when you circle strafe in a FPS.

MS Intellimouse Explorer.

I love the optical mice. For me, they seem far more accurate than any ball mouse that I have ever used. I've become a much better railer in Q3A with this mouse. I expreience none of the above mentioned problems with them.

Logitech's are nice as well. IMHO the MS mouse feels and looks little better. I always end up with driver problems with logitech mice tho'... wierd.

My advice tho'... go optical.

Interesting how you have to worry and deal with stuff like that :p

I hardly think about it. I have the sensitivity high enough such that I never need to lift my wrist up, and the wrist rest is nice and comfy. I spend much more time (and I'm sure most others do, too) with preventative maintenance on my Windows install than I do on my mouse. The MouseMan+ is the comfiest rodent I've ever laid hands on, including all of the new optical mice, and the minimal time I spend on maintenance is well worth keeping it running in top form.

I just called 1-425-454-2030 tonight and told them my Intellimouse Explorer wasn't working. After getting my product # and running a quick diagnostic, they said a new one would be sent to my home address. No need to return the broken one since the cost of them picking it up and fixing it is more than the mouse is worth.

Say what you want about Microsoft, but you gotta love their customer service on this one. :)

I really like the Boomslang 2000 because its the only high-performance mouse that's symetrical. I just find those MS and LT mice way to molded to one hand and uncomfortable. Also, I like to switch hands for different types of tasks. I use my right hand for work and games like starcraft. I use my left hand for FPS'
