No...Civics are imports...

And even some imports like Supras and 300ZXs are only fractions of the prices of Lambos and Ferraris, so I wouldn't consider them expensive either.

well, actually, for any given class of car, imported cars DO cost more. and imported brands have all the most expensive cars. the civic is a perfect example, since you can get an "equivilent" american car for less money. and america has nothing to offer to compete with even mainstream high-end sedans, let alone the maybach's or bentley's of the world.

you = owned yourself.

...although imports would cost more than their American equivilents, the fact is that America doesn't have any equivilents. If they did to compete, imports would probably cost less.

I only really put imports together with jap cans and korean cars. Now, yes you can say some cars are imported from germany or whatever, it does not mean the same thing. An import car is a type of car, small to mid size, in most cases made by jap's.
You say exotic about the higher priced cars with limited manufacture.

Subaru = Best cars in the wold
Acura = 2nd best (yes i know acura is an american company, so its basicly honda im saying)

Subaru? lol.

Great cars, but best in the world?

Having driven every brand of car in the world, I'm sure he knows that for a fact ;)

Of course..I mean..how dare I disagree with him. :D

this thread is useless...

can't remember exactly when this stopped, but probably around 8-10 years ago(maybe longer) GM, Ford and Dodge/Chrylser cars were built in the US with all US parts and labor...they were called Domestic....everything else was called an Import since they were imported from Europe or Asia...

that kind of brings up another question...wonder if these references were ever used outside of the US...

these tags pretty much don't apply anymore as Import Builders (Toyota, Mazda, Honda, etc) now build cars in their US plants while some US car makers now build their cars in Mexico...

Actually, only one kind of Merc is currently made in the US. The ML and like you said, it's not very American. It's mainly composed of German parts... that's basically the way BMW and MB work at least. If you look on the % of parts from X source, you'll find that it's 90% or greater German parts. Whereas if you look at Toyota or Nissan, you'll see anywhere from 60-80% foreign parts.

Even though I work for DCAG, I don't think you should take good ol' American automotive engineering too lightly. Consider most of the wonderful technology in cars today (planetary gear automatic transmissions, multi-use computer control modules, etc) were all introduced into mass production by the Big Three. Sure, GM has a tendency to suck teh salty balls when it comes to doing it correctly the first time, but everyone uses that stuff now.

So, a great example of the "import" label problem moreso than the Holden Monaro = Pontiac GTO is the Chrysler Crossfire. It's built in Germany by DCAG, German parts, British designer... yet it's put out on the Chrysler label. Import? Or Domestic?

Or how about my current weekend/daily car? The Eagle Talon? Built in Michigan but consisting of Mitsubishi powertrain, etc with Chrysler adding to the design of the car. People call it an "import" but it says EAGLE. Either that or they say it's domestic and Eagles suck since Mitsubishis are better... it's the same friggin car.

Oh, and Honduhs being the 2nd best make in the world?? Dream on... any company that thinks the Element is a good idea? Thinks that a non-planetary gear automatic transmission is great? Yeah, their definitely on some strong stuff at the Honda facilities.

Here another question... is an Audi an import? Or is it an exotic? How about a Peugeot or a TVR?

Although I wouldn't consider Audi exotic, they do own Lambo...so...

And yes, a lot of cars are pretty much the same exact car...take the Eagle/Eclipse/Lazer, a good example.

hahaha, this is really a test of laziness . . . .

the top poll has about 95 votes (as of when this is posted),

the bottom has about 68

its a steady decent as people get bored and quit doing them.

hahaha, golden.

an exotic is a type of import. Just like how a square is a rectangle but a rectangle is not always a square.

What an ignorant statement. Hyundai's are getting better much quicker than the Japanese brands did.

Haha... They're tin cans for poor people who wants all the crap they can't afford from hondas and toyotas...

those trash ass tin cans will probably outsell any mid-size america can throw at them. watch the sonata sell like hotcakes.

oh btw personally i'd refer to jap/korean as imports, and BMW's and merc's as "european"

actually i just call them by the name and don't generalize.

I would buy an american car over those Hyundai any day... Well the corvettes, mustangs or thunderbirds anyways...

The reliability ratings of Hyundai now exceed BMW and Mercedes.

You're buying the BMW and Mercedes not for there reliabilities and cost factor but for their image and prestige. You buy Japnese cars for those...

I have a 98 Mercedes ML 320. Built in Alabama. Mercedes and Chrysler are under the same corporate umbrella. Do I drive an import?

Since every vehicle nowadays has either the parts or the assembly in another country, I think they are ALL imports.

=EDIT=

To the guy who said Subaru makes the best car in the world:
I have never driven, nor will I ever be able to drive a Rolls Royce. And I'm pretty damn sure those are the best cars in the world.

I would consider the BMW's and Mercedes more of an import than those jap/korean cars, since they are the only ones made in another country. I know some jap/korean cars are made in their native country, but I would guess 80% of them were made in a plant here in America.

BTW, of course a Lamborghini, or a Ferrari, or a Porsche is an import. They are the ULTIMATE import.

I am seriously thinking the OP mixed up 'Import' and 'Exotic'...just my two cents...

I've never heard anyone call a Ferrari an import, nor an Aston Martin or Lamborghini. At least, nobody from the United States.

of these cars won't be called imports, they are considered exotics...
