***READ BEFORE VOTING***

When someone says the word "import" in reference to a car, not specifying where it was imported FROM, which brands do you consider included as possibilities?

I need to settle an argument. I made a remark about the inferiority of most imports in racing, and someone promptly started mashing the likes of Ferrari and Maserati and Aston Martin in my face, which is just NOT what I understand 'import' to mean in American car lexicon. I've never heard anyone call a Ferrari an import, nor an Aston Martin or Lamborghini. At least, nobody from the United States.

import = any brand not from USA. aka ford, GM etc etc

anything OWNED by them do not become domestics. aka mazda, jag, vauxhall (obviously) etc etc

They got you on a technicality. Call 'em rice burners from now on, and you won't have this problem again.

I was trying to be semi-respectful, because the next words out of my mouth were an exception for the Supra TT. I won't make that mistake again. But then, I've STILL never heard anyone call a Ferrari an import.

Normally I wouldn't, but I gave it some thought and I guess it would be. Imports to me are usually ricer cars, Hondas Toyotas etc, but for the sake of the poll I included foreign exotic cars in with imports.

So what about the Pontiac GTO? That's from Oz, sold under a US badge.

In the car racing rings, an import means somthing from japan. You dont call a maserati an import because imports are mostly low priced cars.

Look here and you will see what im talking about.

You could say imports are Japanese/Korean cars, while the likes of Porsche, Maserati, Lamborghini, etc are exotics. I don't know, merely a different term because one car costs more than another and you wouldn't want to demean a Ferrari when you compare it to a Toyota.

The GTO is based off of an Aussie platform

Didn't notice he meant only the GTO, my mistake.

What about the so-called domestics being built in Canada, Mexico, China, etc and the so-called imports being built in America?

What an ignorant statement. Hyundai's are getting better much quicker than the Japanese brands did.

those trash ass tin cans will probably outsell any mid-size america can throw at them. watch the sonata sell like hotcakes.

oh btw personally i'd refer to jap/korean as imports, and BMW's and merc's as "european"

actually i just call them by the name and don't generalize.

If the profits mainly benefit a foreign company, then it's an import car.

The reliability ratings of Hyundai now exceed BMW and Mercedes.
