Well put Aceman. I fear I have let Red get the better of me by slinging useless insults back.

Perhaps we were both too harsh Red. It's like they say, opinions are like assholes, everybody has one and they all stink. I think we both have strong smelling opinions that some can tolerate and some can't.

Ah, Manhatten, Ks

What a misnomer but still a fun place with the Kansas University Co- EDs. 2 places I remember but not by name, 1 had pretty good cajun cooking and the other was a bar. Well, now I remember more places. The Ramada Inn, believe it or not and the Holiday Inn. Spent quite a few nights in both. The Holiday Inn was so strange, one of the biggest and best sitting out in the middle of the prarie just waiting for a foot ball game.

Denali, General Shinseki announced that he is going to make the black beret currently worn by Army Rangers assigned to Ranger Battalions the standard for the Army - except for the Airborne and Special Forces troops that will retain their maroon and green berets. This should take effect in June 14th, the Army's birthday.

Link to Story about Black Beret Issue

I personally think it reeks, but we'll see if he reconsiders. It was a rather spontaneous decision, so hopefully he'll get more input and change this. The rationale behind it is ludicrous...maybe all the pretty maroon berets here at Bragg just overcame his good sense. ;)

But, Red, I don't see where Rogue comes off with a "better than thou" attitude? I could be wrong, but the only thing that closely resembles that attitude is when he posted that he is upset that he serves as the security blanket for "hypocrties and Liberals" such as yourself. You turned the tables and lured him into coming off and looking like that. As GWB said "That's just an old debating trick" ;)
I have no problems or objections in someone not joining the military or believing in the need to join the military to serve their country. To each their own. I will get on my pedestal or soapbox when one critizes my or another's life/career in the military without even knowing anything about it.
I personally believe that there should be a mandatory 2 year enlistment in the military for all young men and women like they have in many other countries. That is my personal opinion. I will press all three of my boys into joining the military. I will also discourage them from making a career out of it as it is a terrible path to take and today, a thankless job. I believe they should join and take everything that Uncle Sam has to offer them. In return they should willingly give Uncle Sam 110% for that short enlistment.

Red, you do your fair share of drinking gasoline and pissing on people's campfires (not that I don't from time to time). That has to give you some pretty bad heartburn. ;)

Red,
If you think for even a moment you have pissed me off, you definitely haven't walked in my shoes. :) I have had to defend myself from verbal attacks and abuse far worse than you tried. I have no heartburn over you or your thoughts, Red. I need no apologies or thank yous from anyone but the federal government. And that shall come when my 20 years are up in the form of a measily retirement.
And now it is time for me to shed these boots and BDUs and put on a Best Buy uniform to to lie to and ignore all future computer owners. At least that's what another thread says I do. ;)

Jenn, I think that's a good thing. The beret represents nothing, it's the tab on the shoulder that counts. That way, they could getrid of that awful class a cap. Will they tuck their pants(dress) into their combat boots, though?
Anyway, the tab carries on through your life, and it's well earned. They could make the beret pink for all i care. The tab and what goes along with it are the only things that make a difference, and always will.

I never served in the Military. But my hats off to everyone who did.

How can a question like "What branch of Military have you served in?" start a flamefest? Oh I see now. Could only be one reason.

Anyone care to guess?

Back when the Vietnam war was going on (being vietnamese :)) my dad worked for the South as a Millitary Intelligence Officer. I think he made maps that guided the bombers and where the VC was. Something like that.

Oh yea, he had American certificates and medals..but he had to burn them and throw them away for fear after the VC took over. He told me he like dismantled all his guns and threw them away. He had to go to the concentration camps (is that what it is?) and he said he was a weatherman so they made him do three months of labor. He then got let out, and fled to the US. Hmm, go to fly first class in a 747 too! So he wants me to work in some field of Intel.

I just told you a story? Why? I don't know!

I started in the Army Air Corps in the 40's which became the Air Force -- and then served three "Truman extensions". Every six months I received an official communique ostensibly signed by president Truman saying "Congratulations" and then went on to say that since I had an essential MOS (Military Occupational Speciality -- I was an airborne radar mechanic) that my enlistment was being extended for another six months. I don't think it likely that many people here will have read "The Good Soldier Swcheik" but that described me. When I was finally discharged, the discharging officer said: "Simmons, we will take women and children before we take you again". I was really worried for a time when the services opened the doors to women.

64bitloopy, I have to disagree with you. The beret symbolizes a lot to the troops who wear it - if Gen. Shinseki thought the whole Army needed berets then why couldn't he just pick another color???? I think what the problem really is is that he's NOT taking the unique berets away from Special Forces and Airborne troops...just Rangers. It's just a really peculiar decision, one not in any way explained by his public statements.

Gustavus, LOL! I had a couple weird experiences thanks to the Army's idea of an "essential MOS" (Airborne generator mechanic is essential????? Ha!) so your story really made me grin. If you jumped back then you have all my admiration. Those were some brave men that test drove the Airborne concept. If you haven't been to the Special Operations and Airborne museum in NC you should go. :)

jenn, think what you want. the green beret and the black beret only symbolize the romantic notion that those outside of the military have for elite troops. When I was in the service, I rarely saw my beret, being that I spent a little over 10 months each year either in the field or training somewhere else. Youhonestly can't tell me that you used to notice the unit patch and the uniform of the soldiers you used to know. I think it's about time they standardize the damn cap and get rid of the cu## cap that has plagued the majority of the army for so long.

To this day, every time i look at my dress greens, or my old ratty bdus, the tabs on my uniform give me that warm fuzzy feeling that I was something. The beret has become a wonderful dust mop.
It's too bad they chose the black beret, cause i think the army would have looked much better in a nice red.

the only time i ever had one was in basic training. Thank god I never became a leg.....I would have died had I been forced to wear or even think about that thing. There is a lot of terminology that somehow gets you odd looks from the civilian crowd.:)

LOWDRAG, the flamefest wasn't about which branch is better, it was just a mis-understanding about a few opinions not even related to any branch in particular.
