BoberFett,

STEEL ON CALL! Started off my Army Career at 3/14th (86-90). 3 years directly with them in Sioux City, IA and TDY 1/4 of the time to take care of you Rag Bags up at Ft Snelling. Now I'm assigned to Ft Snelling and still have to put up with that "wonderful" Unit Administrator.

IDF stands for the Israeli Defense Forces, I don't know what WTF is? I thought it was Womens Track and Field but could be wrong.

Hey, I think this is a good place to ask advice since you all have been in different military branches. I am 14 and my plans are to join the USAF when I am older. I want to be a pilot of the jets and choppers. Moreso the choppers than the jets. I don't know what I have to do to get there, though. Do I need to go to a certain college and major in something to do this or will I get my education in the Air Force Academy? This is really what I want to do in life so this info is important to me. Thanks.

PS- Oh yeah, one more thing. There is a class offered at my school called JROTC. I understand it is for students who plan to join the military after high school. Would this be a good class to take considering what I want to do in life?

Silent, you are probably gonna have to join the Army if you wanna fly a chopper. I am willing to bet you want to fly an Apache too. Anyway, the Army has a program called WOFT (Warrant Officer Fight Training). If you can get into this program, it is about a year long, not including Basic Training.

Wangel, sorry for the sarcasm. WTF stands for "What the F*ck", a common abbreviation and response to something that no one understands.

Bob,

Why dont you ask a question that is hard to answer???:D

Ok, Ill try to help:

How is your eyesight?

If not the best and I dont know the requirements today, if you need glasses forget everything except for choppers.

ROTC or any military associated program will only help and may also tell you that the life you envision is not for you.

Next, you need a College degree, best ones I cant tell you but any recruiter can. Look for a GOOD recruiter and not just one waiting to get out.

Navy is probably the best, wish I went that way but a longer committment. Air Force is great if you meet the requirements also. Cant comment on other breanches but you can find out for yourself.

Just be sure you know what you want. No one in my family was in the Military and except for my recruiter, no body knew sh*t!

Hope this helps. Its not easy but anything worth while isnt.

Any more questions, just ask or PM me and Ill try to help or steer you in the right direction.

I did a year at Vanderbilt under an MCROTC scholarship but I determined that that wasn't the life style I needed to live (just my personal convictions) My brother and law is a marine and I have a lot of respect for you guys (and girls if any).

Thanks for your sacrifice.

For a little motivation go here

Hoorah.

Red,

Why is it that you always feel it is necessary to inject your Liberal, anti-establishment, "Let's all be free and smoke pot!" style of rhetoric into everything. I am willing to bet that you never served your country and/or fought for the bull$hit form of freedom guys like you cling to. It must be nice getting things for free and then complaining about them all the time.

ps-if you have served in the armed forces of the US, then I stand corrected. At least you have contributed something to warrant your assinine inputs.

RED-

Come on, this is me.

<<don't take that holier than though attitude when I counter your suggestion that having a selected service would be good for this country. I think that those who volunteer do come out better from their experience in the Armed forces>>

"Holier than thou?" You just agreed with me.

<<but I will not ever agree that we need a Service Service because it's good for American Youth.>>

I am talking about self discipline, respect, sense of self worth and goal orientation. Come on, re read my post.

I respect you and "G*d knows" I am not defending Viet Nam but your comment does not fit here.

RED-

NOW we are in complete agreement.

I did enlist in 63 as I saw no future for myself at that time without help. I made a choice and I got that help but I still think I earned it. Enlisting in 73, I Think not.

Take care, Bud.

US Army: 1981 - 1985: 11B20P, Infantry, Airborne, E-5. Two years at Ft. Campbell, KY (101st Airborne/Air Assault) with 1/503rd Infantry; two years in West Berlin with 2/6 Infantry, then after we were regimentalized, with 4/506th Infantry. Had I stayed in, it would've been back to Campbell.

Also did 1.5 years Active Army National Guard a as Payroll/Personnel Clerk (75B), 2/128th TLAT (TOW Light Anti-Tank). That sucked!

11 years total including the guards.

Red, don't even come at me calling me a punk. First off, I'm not the one sniveling all the time. I can pull thread after thread after thread where you are the primary pussy sniveling about how this isn't right and that isn't right. Second, you insinuate that I joined for selfish reasons, well, apparently you don't know me either. The primary reason I joined the Army was for the pride of serving my country and upholding that which many before me have fought and died for, including members of my family. It's a shame that members of our Armed Forces fight and die for piss poor hypocrites like yourself who rape the free speech that they helped to protect for you. I'm sure that if we ever met face-to-face, you wouldn't be so bold.

SilentBob,
You unfortunately will never be able to fly choppers for the Army. The only BIG requirement for WOTF school is 20/20 vision. No ifs ands or buts about it. Been there tried that. You can wear contacts or glasses AFTER you become a chopper pilot, but you canot enter flight school with a need for eye correction.

ACEMAN-

Is that true now? The only thing you could fly was choppers if you wore glasses when I was in. Could have changed it yet again and Im talking about the Air Force.

I was unable to serve in the military but have a question for those that did/are. I read recently that the Army will make standard issue to all soldiers a beret as a way to increase morale. Is this true and what do you think? I don't see how this would raise morale but might offend those that currently wear a beret.

You're funny Red. Tell me, why did you even respond to this poll anyway? I suspect it's because you have this void where your balls used to be wishing that you had in fact joined the military and served your country in some way. It's an opportunity missed you miserly bastard. Keep up the hypocricy, you do it well.

I don't know about the USAF requirements for pilots, I only know the Army requirements.....20/20 vision.

And Red, my 2 cents worth is that you were overly harsh and out of bounds on your comments to Rogue. My viewpoint is that people who have never walked a foot in my boots should "Know their Role and Shut their mouths". The military life is a different calling and one that cannot be fully explained or appreciated by a person who has never served a day of their life in the military. To be truthful, I joined the Reserves for college money. Three years later, I went Active Duty and made my career out of it. It wasn't 100% out of patriotism. It was a decent job with good pay. I have reenlisted twice and continue with the military for one main reason......It puts food on my table. If that's so frikken terrible, then may God strike me down with lightning. There is still the patriotism and desire to serve my country burning in my soul. As for young people joining for those reasons, I find nothing wrong with it nor do I shadow their beliefs with the cynicism that has grown inside of me. If you line 10 soldiers up and ask why they serve, you would likely get 10 different answers. But for you to "label" and rip into a soldier like you did to Rogue was waaaaaay out of bounds. I assume you answered Rogue's "question" by not saying if you have walked in a soldier's boots. If you have, then accept my apology. If you have not, then I recommend you cease your debate and kindly leave this thread. I have no respect or time for a man to spew at the mouth when he has never known what it's like to be a soldier and never will until he puts on the uniform.

Rogue,

Are you stationed at Junction City, Kansas?

Lived in KC, Mo myself.

Been there, done that, got the tee shirt.
