Gnote, your examples for Pac's lyrics were, in my opinion, unfair (as already pointed out). Check out this verse from "Holla At Me" and I don't think you could say the same thing you posted:

A place to spend my quiet nights, Time to unwind,
so much pressure in this life of mine, I cry at times,
I once contemplated suicide and woulda tried
But when I held that nine all I could see was my mama's eyes
No one knows my struggle, they only see the trouble
Not knowing it's hard to carry on when no one loves you
Picture me inside the misery and poverty
No man alive has ever witnessed struggles I survived
Praying hard for better days, Promised to hold on
Me and my dogs don't have a choice but to roll on

Very few of them. What percentage of rock songs are MORE gramatically correct (or simply UNDERSTANDABLE ENGLISH) than rap, R&B, HipHop, etc.?

I think KRS One, Canibus, Binary Star all have more talent than Biggie or 2Pac (note: I like both these articsts), but lyrically, Canibus just smashes both of them.

To me, wrong is wrong. I don't really see the point in complaining that something is "more wrong". But it's not like I listen to music to brush up on my grammar anyways. :p

Again, this is another perfect example of the simplicity of tupac's rhyme structure. Basic internal rhyme, no metaphors or similes. Yes, the message is conveyed, but again its payload is its emotion not the sophistication of the phrase?s rhyme structure.

and again, he rhymed on with... on

LoL

They sing pretty slow when they do R&B so i'd venture to guess 100 percent...

Pac was pretty fluent in english, His stuff even made sense. Big Fat Bastard on the other hand, I never understood the jibberish that came out of his big fat mouth.

Good he makes my skin crawl... Ewwww

Um, right now, Pac easy. 50 has only released one album, he's just started to step into Hip-Hop, he's got a lonnnggg way to go before he can even be considered with Pac.

FMMCobalt: Listen to "New World Water" by Mos Def, "The Manifesto" by Talib Kweli and Mos Def, "Hiphop Knowledge" by KRS One, "Master Thesis", "Poet Laureate II", "Draft Me", "Cenior Studies" by Canibus.

Then come and tell me these guys don't know english or that rap sucks. Mos Def, Talib Qweli, and Canibus are some of the best rappers/lyricists in the business, sadly they don't the attention they deserve. Their songs have positive meanings as well (mostly Mos Def songs).

I'm sorry, next time I'll insert the words "obvious joke" at the end of my post. 50 has been in Hip-Hop for a while, he's always sucked, he's just finally getting into the mainstream.

Agreed. Mos Def & Talib Kweli are probably more educated than you Cobalt ;) No, in all seriousness, they are amazing poets and lyricists and people need to recognize them more and realize they are probably the truest essence of hip-hop. Kweli & Def up.

cant wait. only a week and half till i see kweli and the roots at irvine. i agree with madd_indian said, he named some amazing lyricists (even thoguh i cant share the same love for canibus, sorry, i tried though). like right now, im listening to main flow feat. talib kweli - hip hop worth dying for. amazing song. i esp. like this part):

Rain flows on these b-boy heads like Kangols
African, call and response
You're not a purist, your pure sh**
You don't preserve the culture, you disturb it

Where are you guys getting these lyrics from? Is there a website that has lyrics for these songs??

I dunno why you don't like Canibus, but I think he is freaking awesome. He has a HUGE vocabulary and uses it very well. Plus anyone who mentions David Hume in their songs, must be pretty smart!

I just usually use google if I can't find lyrics to a song. Just try googling :)

Or, I actually do write lyrics for songs that I can't find on google (like freestyles, etc)

see? this is why i sometimes i hate the mainstream... they release stuff like 'its your birf-day!', it gets all big, and all of a sudden everyone comes out of the woodworks and think all rap is like that. they then become a judge on the genre and deem it crap. oh well, to each his own i suppose.

more of kweli's verse from 'hip hop worth dying for' (the song that is currently stuck in my head)
Try to come around for a pound
White boy with a backpack
Overheard talking about how Blackstar was whack
Hi-tek tracks was flat, try to give me some dat
Said I'm in his top five
Emcees he'd love to see perform live
He said, Krs was the best, Redman came second
He said he liked Super Nat but he don't like his records
The Roots was the best live as far as group
Mos Def's alright, but what's up with his leather suit
I see him on stage singing and doing rock covers

as for the lyrics yeah, same, i google them. as for canibus, iunno, just never felt his style, sorry. i admit he does have some original verses and he'll throw some big ole' words in his songs, its just when i was in high school, i bought can-i-bus and was severly dissapointed. i had to wherehouse it the next day. and id never done that with a cd before, take it back so quickly.
