Poll: Time to build a AMD-Powerhouse... x-mas comes early

well.. I have the cash.. it's up to you all...
I want to build a AMD-256,(have a 13gig dma66 hard drive),video card(high end). Fast cdrom
I have a burner on a intel machine.. *cough*intel slow crap*cough.

Your suggestions on hardware... motherboard chipsets, memory, video card. I have a bunch of cash.. but don't want to go overboard.. Need to keep some for apps and games...

I have been building intel computers for years.... but i don't know my a$$ from elbow when i comes to AMD. Any help would be appriciated including links for great prices!..

thanks

MSI K7T pro2
1 Ghz Tbird 🙂
256 MB crucial PC133 RAM
geforce gts, or Radeon 64MB DDR

Asus A7V or Abit KT7 (RAID if you like)
900 Mhz T-bird (For 100Mhz I dont see the price diff to 1Ghz worth it especially since you should hit about 1.1Ghz OCed)

And fkloster... you bought RDRAM so dont speak. Your opinion now means crap. Sorry but anyone who buys RDRAM is scum.

My opinion means crap? I shouldn't speak? I am scum? Good morning to you too 'Foul One' 🙂

Sorry anyone who buys RDRAM is evil. Its like buying crack from a dealer. Not only are you buying a overpriced item, you are supporting a scummy buisness.

I have been building intel compters for years..

It USED TO BE SAID, if it's not intel then its not a computer
just like i used to be and still is said if it's not a HP printer then its not a printer at all.

well HP still has the printer title.. intel... well .. not even close.. rember when AMD was competive in only the LOW end celeron market? Face facts AMD ownes intel in true speed(not JUST CLOCK SPEED).. which they ALSO own intel...

and for less money....Its time to build a AMD.. sorry bud

<< ....Its time to build a AMD.. sorry bud >>

...And you would be sorry for..'what'? That Intel is not the first choice for 'hobbiests'? Don't be. Its all good.

i personally like the geforce2 mx for somewhere around 120 dollars. Thats the cheap with great value card. If you want to blow a nice chunk of change, you could go geforce2 64mb ddr version. For the cpu if you plan on overclocking and like to do the tweaking yourself, get a tbird 800 or 900. Add a taisol heat sink, there are 3 variations currently. The smallest you should recieve as your retail heat sink+fan with the tbird. A larger one that does not a whole lot better and a soon to be coming overclocking version with 120 fins and a delta 38 cfm fan on top. I dont know alot about cases, i own an enligh 7237 and i think it works fine. Some of those overclocking stores have tornado cases and such that have blowholes and fans all done for ya.

I'd go for the MSI K7T Pro2 unless you are actually going to use the RAID feature on the Abit. The MSI K7T Pro2 will be more dependable and also has over-clocking features (multiplier adjustment). The Abit board has features it looks like you are not interested in (AT-100 controller, RAID).

And throw a V5 5500 in there. It gives you better 2D, better fsaa, and competative fps, plus dependability. Abit and nVidia might have extreme specs, but a certain amount of flakiness goes hand in hand with bleeding edge specs. MSI and 3dfx are solid performers with very practical features that are great in real usage as opposed to just on paper.

For overall performance, use the RAID configs that some have suggested, and then combine those with at least 256 megs ram so you don't have to use them too often. I know you already have a HDD, but it just seems that you really ought to go for speeding up the slow parts, and two Hd's striped will really help in overall performance. One more note... I've seen people suggest the Deskstars. These are good, but if you wan't to save a bit of money, try the Quantum Fireball LM series. They're right up there with the desktars in performance, but not in price. See the Storage Review site for details.

One other thing that I don't see mentioned is the high speed internet connection--that other slow point in most computers.
