<< There is only one true reason that SUV's are villified (sp). Class-envy. >>
Not really. I can afford to get one, but I don't see the point for myself, since I'm a city driver and don't haul stuff around. SUVs definitely make sense for those people who are hauling equipment or boats, etc. or need to drive through the bush. People like me have no problem with this. No, we have a problem with the yuppie wannabes who buy them to drive around the city. It bugs me that these are purchased as a status symbol, while some of us try to be more responsible with fuel usage, etc. It bugs me even more that my future purchase "subsidizes" a yuppie SUV purchase, because I think the car giants only need to have an average fuel economy across their various models. Ie. I buy an economy car, which allows Joe Wannabe to buy a gas-guzzling SUV to put his golf clubs in.
It's bizarre. I was in the car dealership the other day looking at a smaller car (which I like better for handling over a SUV and simply because I don't need more). The sales guy introduced me to another customer who was in my field. When I told him I wanted a small car, he was totally shocked because I could afford a more expensive one. WTF? Buy an expensive car, just because you can... Huh?
