In what way am I being obtuse? I thought I'd been very clear in what I was saying.

While not common with hammers, it is sufficiently common with knives and multitools. Want to get custom tools on your SAK or Leatherman? Want it Cerakoted? Want custom plier ends? Want a custom SAK blade? Want custom grips? Want custom pocket clips? There are people that do those things.

For the most part, a hammer is a hammer. As long as it is in decent shape, and is the right kind, any one will do as well as any other. Knives and multitools, however, are different enough from one another, in build/design, that two people may find themselves better off with different ones, even for the same work.

Much of the same can be said for lathes and routers, which people commonly customize and tweak, and yes, even show off, as much or more than, they use them.

A gun is a tool; but to be fair, it's much more akin to a folder, multitool, router, milling machine, lathe, etc., than a hammer, for doing a comparison of how one can become attached to one. It is a tool for the user, as much as it is for any specific task (usually the striking of far away bits of steel or paper :)).

Long ago I worked for a hardcore survivalist who would bring his survivalist magazines and leave them for us to read at break. One had an article about how to build that sucker (though with twin drum mags) and have 500 rounds of .22LR Gatlin gun goodness to protect yourself when society inevitably breaks down. An accompanying article told how to make a survivalist buggy from a VW bug, including cutting a gunner's hatch with the homemade .22LR Gatlin gun mounted within a bullet shield on a ring mount. The author offered the sage advice that if one couldn't afford a VW bug, one could simply wait for society's fall to begin and steal one.

Thirty years later I still chuckle when I think of a chubby guy in camo sheepishly returning his neighbor's Super Beatle . . .

"Swear to G-d Bob, I was sure society was collapsing!"

    :D

:D We're probably all on a BATFE watch list now.

Murder by bare hands still out strips ALL murders by firearms throughout history. Even when comparing mass murder. Yes, more mass murders happen from bare hands or melee weapons than firearms if you look at all statistics. Funny how that works huh?

Guess you should remove your hands. You are possession of weapons of mass murder if you do not.

3 looks to be the only one regulated by the NFA since it seems to have selective fire modes.

Russia is probably the closest country for population, land size, and cities over 500k. But there they can't defend themselves and violent crime is insane.

Russia's crime stats is a joke compared to us. Our murder rate is higher than Iraq's.

I said Russia's stats is still a joke compared to South Africa. Interpol stats 1995-1999 and 2001 (6 years), the number of persons murdered in South Africa within those 6 years is 287,292 – averaging 47,882 per year.

South Africa had in 1999 59 murders per 100 000 compared to the USA 6 per 100 000 and Russia's 20 per 100 000. And that just make up 5 percent of crime we have in South Africa. In Apartheid 42 people died a month in South Africa. In 1998 it was 282 people a month in one Township alone. One Township police station got its own mortuary so much murder they have to content with.
