Considering there might be a chance Saddam does not get the death penalty because of UN and world opinion conflictions;

Do you think he should get the death penalty or Life In Prison in Iraq?

I think we should be nice to him but lock him up. That way he'll be like "oh cool, this isn't so bad"

Put him on display. Charge money to see him, & tour the world with him locked in a cage.

Donate the proceeds to rebuilding the Iraqi government.

He will be tried by the ICC for war crimes. He will spend life in prison at the Hague.

Wasn't it said that Saddam would be tried by the Iraqi government?

I think it would be more appropriate for Saddam to be tried by the Iraqi people. He is responsible for the suffering in that nation and since they are more qualified to understand what he truly did having been through it all, he should be tried by them. It would also be a good test of the new Iraqi government and judicial system once it is formed. As far as the ICC, I doubt he would be tried there. Didn't we refuse to recognise the ICC a while back?

I think an Iraqi tribunal should give him a choice: a dunk in the acid pool, or say hello to Mr. Plastic Shredder. A bullet in the back of the head is too good for that SOB.

Seconded. But only after a fair and complete trial for some sense of closure. This execution should be performed in the style you mention as he deserves to die the way many of his (and uday/qusay's) victims did. It should be taped and broadcasted to show how saddam finally got a taste of his own medicine.

I think putting him in jail, and making sure he never gets out would be the best thing to do, if you put him to death he'll become a martyr, if he just dies as a frale old men (make sure to depict im like that, that recent pic of im like santa claus was good on it's way ;)) that way he will have lost his respect, he lost allready a lot of respect when he was captured, a lot of his followers would have expected him to fight to the death, and now he's considdered a coward by them.

Good point, boran. That could be a problem. If the new government tries him and puts him to death, then he will become just that. Death by obscurity and old age is best for the political/social climate over there. Just imagine what would've happened if the Russians had found Hitler alive and exectued him publically? It would have been a mess. Anyway, if they do decide to execute him, they should make his death a very fitting one as compared to his crimes much as I mentioned in my previous posts on the subject.

Thats what was said by the US. However the world at large will have the final say. Saddam will be tried JUST like all other war criminals by the ICC. Saddam shouldnt get treated any differently than any other war criminal.

a problem with my suggestion of keeping him in prison -just tought a bit further- is that they also would need to make sure he aint running some buisness from his cell, it happens that a criminal organises crimes from within prison, leading terrorists shouldnt be much harder.

Also a good point. I watched something on the History channel a while back about how he used to do just that during the days before the Baath party took over. He would smuggle messages to the rest of the party when his wife/kids "visited" him. It isn't like he's never done that before. If he is kept in prison, I would suggest that it be in solitary confinement with no visitors, aside from the gaurds, that is..hehe...

And one more thing, perhaps someone should start a poll/thread on who should try Saddam. People keep mentioning that the ICC should be his final stop instead of answering to the Iraqi people. He should answer to his victims.

Where's the poll option "Let him go, he's not so bad" ?
You know, for the wacky liberals.

He could run for pres, but then he'd take away mostly Dean votes.

I think life in prison.

For all those who talk about bullet in the head, or acid or paper shredding or something as crazy as that- aren't we the ones saying that is wrong and we shouldn't do it. Its one of those "don't sink to their level" kind of things. If you kill him he will be seen as some martyr by a group of people and they best manner is to let Iraq move on and just keep him in some uber secure jail where he can't do crap so if/when he dies it won't be some huge event or something.

If we hand him over to Iraq there is a chance they could find him not guilty or try and reinstate him then we would look really foolish. I think give him to the ICC where we can be sure the outcome.

I think he should be tried by the new Iraqi courts. Since we flooded the new government with Iraqis exiled by Saddam and there are *very few* Ba'athists in the new government, Saddam would obviously get a fair trial. Any trial given to Saddam Hussein will be a publicity stunt, there is absolutely no chance the U.S. government will put him under the jurisdiction of a system that will not guarantee he be found guilty. Watch and see. Freedom and Justice are just words.
