Yeah, theres not much one can say to defend that..

... but on the other hand, I worry that if Annan were to leave, the US admin would suddenly get involved in UN affairs again and try to put in someone very pro-US.

that wont happen. France, Syria, Germany, Russia, Lybia and other enemies of America in the UN wont allow for that

Enemies of america? Jesus didn't you get your pills this morning?

I haven't really heard anything about what his son has done so i can't judge from that. What i can say is that he's done a damned fine job! I don't know why people would disagree with that.

yes the bully in the schoolyard usually enjoys having the biggest stick. regardless of whether or not the rest of the kids can't stand his mean, arrogant, insecure ass. thank God though when he gets old and slows down he usually dies a quiet, miserable and lonely death.

Maybe i don't know anything about it because american media is the only media that cares. Nothing about it in danish media.

Show me some links. And that aswell for the Rwanda and Serbia stories.

Stealing is not "correct".

What you do, is you borrow them money to pay american companies to rebuild their country. Which means you will get the money back. Quite ingenious really!

This is pretty sad.

Corruption is corruption. A horrible act is a horrible act, regardless if your Danish media reports it or not. No offense, but Danish media must be even worse than US media.

yeah, he's done a fine job at not doing what the UN is in place to prevent! if thats your qualification of great leadership, then i'd hate to know what you think of poor leadership!

Sure he can go. He has problems he can't deal with. Bush needs to go more than he does, but we like our incompent/corrupt leaders.

I really don't know his reason for not "doing" anything. But you know, he did try to stop the Iraqi war! So he has gotten better since 1994. And judging from two cases, with very little info, is not enough to make an otherwise good leader resign.

The Arizona senator declined to follow calls for Annan's resignation from US Senator Norm Coleman, who is leading a congressional probe and who says he has evidence that Benon Sevan, the UN official who ran the now-defunct programme, had received payoffs from Saddam's regime.

There has been no indication that Annan profited, but the UN chief admitted there was a "perception problem" after it emerged his son Kojo kept receiving payments until February from a Swiss firm working under the program.

But McCain said corruption in the oil-for-food scheme "maybe justifies our action in Iraq (news - web sites) ... because clearly the sanctions and the framework of the sanctions were completely eroded."

To answer your question Raildog, the corrupt oil smuggling/weapons distributing/terrorist funding/ sanctions violating program for oppressing Iraqis was the most profitable venture the UN has ever been given access and control over, nice end result. They protected their $$ as tightly as the UN security members Saddam bought off protected their sugar daddy.

Hes from the EU, they didn't care about Serbia hence his lack of knowledge and their lack of action. FYI the US led the way in stopping that particular case of genocide, we seem to have a better track record at stopping that than the UN....

Don't really care who does become the useless UN's leader, but who's in the running if he does resign?
