A re by definition can only happen if it's already been formated; so if it's a new HD it's clearly a format. Standard usage of the term after that calls for format. If somebody just rebuilt their machine this morning and had to do it again I'd accept a "I have to reformat", but if it's been a year and they say "I have to reformat" the term becomes a little harder to stomach.

The way I see it you could use either, but it depends on the situation. You need a choice for "both" in your poll.

What's the difference between the two? I thought they were one in the same.

Sort of like asking, should I buy a medium Quizno's Black Angus or get the RossMAN Meal Deal? They're the same!

Question: if the disk was formatted and then you formatted again using a different type of format, then what is it? Does this situation change your answer from above?

"Reformat" would be correct if you are doing it again. Of course, we're talking about Windows here, for the most part, so...

Harvey's first law of physics:

Everything in the universe is composed of two things, matter and doesn't matter. The answer to this is the latter. ;)
