yea, i still use a serial port for my palm m100. is there something wrong with that?
and yes, i did have a computer with a serial mouse also.

<< I use one on my server for to get into my router. >>

Yup. Console router-management. Good ol' Hyperterminal...

I manage my Cisco 806 through Unix via the serial port.

My TI-89 calculator uses the serial port to download and upload programs. Back in the day when I got it, the only USB cable they had was for a Macintosh. Now they have a USB cable for PC too, but I don't want to spend the money to "upgrade" my cable. 🙁
BTW, everything else (Epson SC880, HP SJ 3300C, Kodak DX3500) is USB. 😛

Oh yeh my ti85 graphing calculator uses serial port. But I don't connect it to my computer all that often.

And a com port is plenty fast for even the fastest 56k modem. And external modems are usually good since they are always hardware.

UART 16550 speciifes a transfer rate of 112kbps I think...might be higher actually...I know it's above 100 though, so it's plenty for a 56kbps modem.

Modems do not need PCI in any way shape or form.

<< I use my serial for my modem actually. VEry fast modem it is🙂

no named brand one but its hardware and dam fast🙂
>>

Yup, same here. I use a US Robotics 56K X2 that was firmware updated to V.90. I think it's about 5 years, and it works just as well now as it did when I got it!

Still using the serial ports on a couple systems around here. On my box I use one to connect to my TI-83 to upload/download programs; my dad's (my old k6-2 400) uses a serial port to connect to an external dialup modem.

I used to use mine quite a bit for LapLink when I was in grad school, but my laptop is so antiquated (486/66!) that I no longer have any need to mess with it.

I have a external 56K modem w/c I use when my DSL is slow/dead. Used to connect my Olympus D-460 camera to the serial port when downloading pictures from the smartmedia (slow as hell). Replaced it with a USB Smartmedia reader/writer. 😱

I used a serial mouse last week on my sister's old computer. I used a serial cable to transfer files from one computer to another a few years ago. That was one of the slowest and most painful things I'd ever done.

both of my serial ports are in use on my XP box - one is for the IR receiver for the remote control I use to control winamp, powerdvd, WMP and ATI TV tuner software.

the other is hooked up to my l33t LCD screen which displays a winamp vis and song info, system info etc.

I need the serial port for my Nokia phone's data cable. It beats using SMS to send myself logos and ringtones, I can just download everything to/from the phone.
