It should be 18.
Iowa passed such a law a couple of years ago.

I was down there for a week last month.

That state has some of the worst drivers in the country.

1) They should raise the minimum to like 21.
2) Institute a maximum of like 70
3) Ban all cell phone usage while driving.
4) Six month jail terms for improper lane changes.

Maybe not that harsh....but something needs to be done.

I'm all for raising the maximum everywhere.

this just happened about 2 miles from my house

We went by the spot 2 days ago. Someone put up a cross and two girls were crying by it. All the skid marks and fluids are on the west bound lane, and he was going east. He completely crossed over the line. This isnt exactly a busy road, its very rural.

We've tried twice to ban cell phone use while driving in this state.
It just won't pass. Too bad the families of people killed by drunk drivers or cell phone users can't sue the state for not enacting common sense law.

I think IL just passed a law making it 18.

i think thats nuts. i have had mine since i was 14 (special permit) and i have NEVER gotten into a wreck.
I agree they need to make the test harder. The driving part was a maybe 5 minutes in a area with NO OTHER CARS. it was silly it didnt really test you at all.

If i didnt have a car at 16 i would not been able to work (i was on my own at 15) and not be able to pay rent. heck i wouldnt have been able to enjoy after school sports or take extra summer classes at the local CC.

I worry more about the 80yr old in the boat doing 15 in a 40 then i do some kid doing 45 in the 40. heck all the accidents i have seen lately involve either a 60+yr old who was driving to slow on the tollway or 25-40yr old who while driving was on a Cell phone.
though they should ban cell phones while driving unless you have a hands free kit. i have a cell with a hands free kit but i dont use it. i wait till i get where im going or have my wife talk to them.

I voted for 18. Not really sure that is high enough. True that some 15-16 yo are mature enough to handle a car but I don't think most are. A few days ago, about 30 miles from me, three teens died doing 100 mph on a rain soaked road. One of the tires was a temp spare rated for 50 mph. They lost control (no kidding) of the car. The Honda Accord was broken in to three pieces.

Many young drivers need experience to become responsible. Most often, they're wreckless on the road until they get into a rear-ender or pick up speeding tickets. I know this to be the case when I was 17 with a full license. I look back and say WTF were my parents thinking ? I will take this into consideration when I have kids of my own.

This is not to say whether the minimum driving age should be raised or lowered, but merely that kids need to learn responsibility when they first feel the freedom of being able to operate a machine that can easily kill.

Honestly, I read a fact the other day that in Singapore, the power of the vehicle is determined by the age of the driver. When you are 16-18, you have a certain "cc" engine... and when you're up to 25, you are allowed to drive the max available, etc. We don't need to be arming 18 year olds with the power of a 2000 Corvette... like the IDIOT who was drag racing a 2002 Mercedes around here that broadsided and killed another young couple in their Jeep. Their parents should also be held responsible in my opinion. At least the kid got 2nd degree manslaughter. We learn from experience (like I said above), but something like this SHOULD NEVER happen. Put him away for a long long time.

I'm almost 17, I have driven since the day I got my permit in CA and I have no tickets, I stop all the way for stop signs, the older ones are even worse than I am. I never drink and drive, thats just stupid. So there are execptions..

true, there are exceptions in every case, but the majority of 15-16 year olds are NOT responsible enough to drive...

i hate minimum age laws. I'm 15, attend a university, and live with my parents for only a few months out of the year, but I CANT DRIVE because of stupid age restrictions. I can't even get a job because nobody wants to hire an employee with restricted hours and other junk. :| I can't even rent my own apartment, even though i've been living away for home for over 6 months. :| it's total bullsh|t

15 at a university ? Are you Doogie Houser or something? ;)

I was a maniac when I was 16 and driving. When I was 15 I was actually driving a towned down outlaw on the dirt tracks around chicago. I thought I was all that And a bag of chips. That translated into me being a very agressive driver. I have since learned that it is stupid to drive on the street like that, and I now save it for the track.

I am 22 now, and see the error of my ways. I still can not believe I was never in an accident that was my fault.

That being said, I think the 16 year limit is fine, as long as they make the test harder. You are oging to drive your whole life, and be in control of a 4000 pound bullet that can decimate anything it hits. I think every new driver should have to go to a defensive driving school. Drivers should be taught how to control a out of control car. ( ever seen the "loose" teaching cars they use at driving schools? there are casters under the rear wheels to simulate a super loose condition at only 3-5 mph. )

This pansy crap that you have to go though now is a joke. kids need to understand driving is a privlege, not a right.

If you raise the limit to 18, then you'll just have aggressive 18 year old drivers. Its not an issue of people being more mature at 18...becuase when you first get your liscense you want to test boundaries. Hell, I haven't calmed down since the day I was 16...I'm just more experienced. When I got my first ticket, I went out and got a radar detector instead of slowing down. I'm 21 now, and my driving habits are still the same as when I was 16...
I had decided I was gonna speed very excessively since I was a little kid when my parents would crawl around never getting a ticket and driving the speed limit or below everyhwere. I'd look out the window and wonder why EVERYONE was passing us. I'd question how slow they were driving and they'd say something like becuase its better to be safe than sorry. I decided I would speed everywhere and never be passed when I was like 5. It made me mad driving with them.
I'm safer when I'm speeding and passing people becuase I actually attention and watch the road and scan for cops. When I'm stuck in traffic my eyes wander and I start lookin at scenery and thinking about other things.
People will drive how they will regardless of age restrictoins. You're just going to see accident rates for 18-21 year olds fly up. And for those drivers that calm down...they wont calm down untli years after thta. Face it, everyoen wants to drive their cars fast and take turns fast because its fun.

look kids got to learn sometime. and I wouldn't have been able to have a job at 16 w/o a car unless it was flippin burgers.

I like the idea of restricting driving time sthough.

They should also show those videos where kids lose legs and $#!T from driving stupid and other people who drive stupid that cause it. Drivers' ed videos... that's some nasty $#!T... scares some sense into us. Does'nt work with everyone, but it helps. Ever see that video where they had to amputate the kids leg on the spot just to get them out after an accident they caused themself? THAT HAD TO HURT.

Raising an age limit does not necessarily lead to more skilled drivers on the road. There will always be plenty of bad drivers around because it is just TOO DARN EASY TO GET A DRIVERS LICENSE IN AMERICA. Besides age, there are hardly any restrictions for attaining a license. Drivers Education should be more comprehensive and test should be WAY more difficult. Regardless of whether somebody is 15 or 80, if that person is skilled enough to drive a car safely and maturely, then let them drive. Think of all the teenagers who are champions at dirt bike motocross events. They obviously have enough skill to be excellent drivers. Many don't consider driving a skill that they should work to improve upon on a regular basis. That is what we need to correct. Driving is definitely an abused privilege in America.

don't try and grow up too fast. About the minimum age in FL, I'm not really sure. I live in FL and have my license, but don't have a car so I don't drive much at all.

You must be a teenager...

Did they actually pass that law in Wisconsin to raise unrestricted to 18? I heard about it, but I was already 18 at the time so I didn't care. I voted for 20 because that's how old I am :D Seriously, it doesn't matter what age you start at. Stupid people (90% of the population) will drive recklessly anyway. Our only hope is to develop transporters like in startrek, make it small enough to fit on your belt, and give the only one to me. That way you all can get into wrecks and such, while I just transport wherever I want to go.

I live in Delaware, I'm 15, and I just got my permit:D

Youre able to get your permit 2 months before your 16th birthday, but for the first 6 months, you have to drive with a 25+ year old w/ 5 years driving experience (this is the stage I'm in). For the second six months, you are able to drive on your own, but only from 6?AM-9PM, except for school, church, or work. When you are 16 and 10 months, you can get your full liscense, no restrictions.

I find this to be ok for me, and I think it does lower the accidents of teenagers. I get a lot of driving experience from the first six months because I'm with my parents the whole time, so I dont speed or do crazy stuff. IMO, I'm ready to drive by myself (either stick or auto), but I dont really mind waiting......its not the end of the world.

The main problem of my state's driving education/policies is in the classroom. In Driver's Ed, I learned nothing. We drove for about 1 period (45 min) for 7 days. If we had spent all the time that we spent in the classroom out on the road, then students would have enough driving experience to get their full liscense as soon as they were done with the course.

Also, it didnt really matter if you sucked at driving, or if you were great.....you got a passing grade anyway (and was allowed to get your liscense). There's no test at DMV, so pretty much everybody gets their liscense.

Great idea, and I hope that they attach a rider to this bill establishing a MAXIMUM driving age as well. There are three advantages to this:

1) It would help to get all those senile 80+ year-old drivers off of the road, that no longer have the reflexes or eyesight required for driving a car.
2) Unlike teenagers, elderly people are politically organized. It's probably the main reason why politicians wouldn't have the guts to persue such a ban, because you would be certain that AARP and other such elderly organizations would bitch about this bill. The more national exposure an issue like this receives, the better.
3) If you're going to support government sanctioned age discrimination, you should support it BOTH ways.

it depends on who you are really, some old folks *still* drive pretty well.

i guess raising the minimum age wouldn't do as much, i'd support stiffer penalties (only 1 point for stuff like speeding, dangerous driving, etc) but some people do need their licenses. Imposing that will probably keep the bad kids out of the roads.
