I'm 16 now...I agree that the minimum unrestricted age should be 18..in NY, you can get your permit(need to drive w/licensed driver) at 16, and you can get your day time license at 16. If your 17 its possible for you to get an unrestricted license if you take drivers ed(something like that i think, i didnt take it) otherwise you automatically get it at 18.

Restrict the types of vehicles--perhaps engines less than 100HP until you reach 18.

under 100hp??? good luck finding a car like that...even my civic is over that. under 300 or so should be more like it...but id be against that :p

Thought you guys might want some foreign input on the issue.

The province of Ontario in Canada has instituted graduated licencing. You can go for your first permit (level G1) by doing a written test at age 16 - at this point, you are licenced to drive with a fully licenced driver in the passenger seat beside you. Not less than 10 months later, you take a road test on local roads to qualify to drive by yourself (level G2). Finally within the next 5 years, you must take a expressway/highway test that lasts for 40 minutes to finish the graduated licencing program (level G). At that point you just do the regular licence renewal every five years.

AHH! I so completely agree. It should be 18. Hell, i didnt even get my permit till i was a few months away from being 19! Aspecially about the old people. Some old bag was driving infront of me about 15 mph below the limit at a 40mph zone, then there is tight 20mph right hander, i took the outside because thats the lane i would need to be in at the light in a few hundred feet after another even tighter left to a stop light. So between these turns it was as if she just took the inside lane and drifting out into the second one. Problem is the nose of my car was at her driver door and she just kept on comin over. ALl i could do was stand on the brakes and fortunatley there werent anybody behind me and she still nearly took out my right front bumper. She must have been atleast in her late 70's, I swear, I wanted to get out and just tear her trachea out of her throat! SHE NEVER SAW ME! People that old should take a driving test every year.

Heck, I think it's insane how easy driving tests are in other states... heck even NJ's is cakewalk. Most people don't even know the rules of the road (ie basic traffic laws & procedures) or choose to ignore them. From all I've ever heard, either from native Floridians or transplants, drivers in FL suck.

I agree they should make the tests harder. I also cant stand it to see 16 year olds who just got their licenses driving around in a brand new shiny sports car bought by their parents. Stupid parents.

Another reason kids shouldnt drive

Father dies after daughter, 15, runs into utility pole

A man riding in a vehicle driven by his teenage daughter died early Thursday morning after the girl crashed into a utility pole, Troy police said.

The 15-year-old was driving just after midnight on westbound Maple east of Coolidge and lost control of a 2001 Chevrolet Tracker. The vehicle crossed over eastbound lanes, jumped a curb and hit the pole head-on, police said.

Walid Dallo, 50, of West Bloomfield died at 5:45 a.m. at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. His daughter was being treated there for injuries police said were not life-threatening.

Police didn't release the girl's name because she's a juvenile.

The girl had been issued a Level 1 driver's license under the state's graduated licensing system, Troy Police Lt. Steve Zavislak said.

The girl had passed a driver's education course and legally could drive with a parent.

Police still were investigating the cause late Thursday but said alcohol did not appear to be involved nor was there an indication of excessive speed.

It is unclear whether the father and daughter were wearing seat belts, Zavislak said.

"At this point in the investigation, we don't know what caused her to lose control," Zavislak said.

He said investigators also will look into whether there was a mechanical problem that might have contributed to the crash.

The girl and her father were heading home after visiting relatives in Sterling Heights.

Hey, I'm 19 and I haven't done either, either. (Although I did get a learner's permit back in feb.). I didn't even care until recently cause my parents decided to move to the suburbs (I live in Montreal) and up till now the subway and the bus was somewhat adequate for getting around.

Like my stupid cousin with her Sunfire GTX. Her parents bought the car... they pay insurance... and they pay gas. Ugh.

Good idea..raise it to 21 and save a lot of gas. And get the reckless ricers off the road. Save gas. Less accidents more road room..yea..good idea.

People are pushing to raise the driving age here in the Atlanta area as well. Teenagers have been getting in fatal crashes on almost a weekly basis here...killing either themselves, their friends in the car, or people in another car.

I think they need to push for mandatory driver's education myself. Not to mention the fact that some parents don't need to give their 16 and 17 year old kids the keys to a high performance sports car (which has happened in a few of the cases here).

sh*t thats sad. she's going to have therapy for life...

and i think testing has shown that young teens are frazzle brained at times.. no matter how good a driver they are, their brain drifts at times. i know i did:) near death experiences a plenty hehe:)

kids shouldn't be able to drive with other people iin the car either. its that way where i live. limits loss of life;) distraction/group effect makes people do things they otheriwse wouldn't..

another sad case of teens killing themselves.... 110 with a donut spare on rear axel. :p

What they should do here in Floriduh is lower the maximum driving age.

Add a yearly driving test and eye exam to those over something below 90!!!! My uncle got his new liscence in the mail for $6 or so at age 97. He couldnt even drive to his PO Box to pickit up!

I think you should be allowed to drive with your parents at just about any age, as long as you can reach the pedals and read road signs. The most experience the better. Experience at a younger age is more valuable. Remember when men used to teach their wives how to drive? How BAD drivers they were? The younger the better. I see nothing wrong with a 13 year old goin around on parking lots with their parents. Might as well get the experience now, not when tehy have their own car and a license.
