Although it's a good album I much prefer the stadium rock/hair metal of the eighties. Give me Guns N' Roses and Metallica over Nirvana anyday of the week.

I'd say GNR and Metallica transended hair metal of the 80s, especially Metallica. Metallica is somewhat close to Nirvana in this respect (though not musically). They were born out of a disgust of the LA BS pompous hair metal scene with its makeup and antics. Metallica just wanted to PLAY...loud. Like Nirvana.

What Nirvana did away with was Whitesnake, Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue and bands like that.

And don't get me wrong, I loved hair metal... while Nevermind was the first CD I ever bought, Def Leppard's Hysteria and GNR's Appetite for Destruction were the first tapes I owned.

It was Metallica's choice to become "Metallica-In-Chains" in the mid-90s. They could have made another And Justice, or even another Black album, but their music definitely changed [for the worse?] with the times.

zod> I know what you mean about Metallica, I hardly ever listen to anything post black album. Actually most of the time I just listen to Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning, they are simply amazing. But, and I know people will laugh, I still find Guns N' Roses to be better. In fact they are my all-time favorite band, there's just something about them that really appeals to me. Also, Appetite for Destruction IS the best album of the 80s, and that means a lot coming from someone that listens almost exclusively to 80s hard rock. :D I would definitely agree though that neither GN'R nor Metallica are pure hair metal, but they definitely have more in common with that than with Nirvana.
