However, because Mormonism is like a secret society it draws many people in for that reason alone. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that we don't know about. Baptisms by proxy of the dead, Masonic rituals, members being required to disclose their finances to ensure 10% tithing of their gross income, special underwear, etc.
Up until 1990 members had to take a blood oath where they simulated slitting their own throat and disemboweling themselves as punishment for telling a nonmember about the rituals that go on in the temples.
Lol. You can go to Mormon.org and find out all you want to know about Mormons. It's hardly a secret society with lots going on "behind the scenes".
Regarding finances, members are not required to disclose their earnings. They are asked if they are paying a full tithe and that's it. No showing of W-2s, no pay stubs. It's all on the honor system.
I have no idea where you get this. I think you're thinking of Dan Brown's new book The Lost Symbol?
Up until recently it was very difficult to know what was going on inside the temples. Today, thanks to the internet, this is much easier. However, to the common citizen, they have not done any research and are not aware just how kooky Mormons are.

Hush, you've already said too much, the next time they come knocking on your door, be very very careful.
