There is talk going around in Colorado with lowering the drinking age back to 18. Im 32 and when I was 18 i could buy 3.2 beer. Personally if your 18 your an adult. you can vote, enter a legal contract. get drafted, basically everything an adult can do but buy beer. Im for lowering the drinking age. It does not work and makes no sense.

Vote yes or no

If I was 18 I'd be all for it. But, now that I'm 25, screw em!! Let them suffer like I did!

although I like drinking occasionally (I'm 17), i think that lowering the legal limit would just make matters worse with teens. It does work in many occasions.

I think one of two things should happen:

1. lower the drinking age to 18
2. raise the age minimum for the military to 21

The thought that an 18 year old could go abroad and kill for this country and come back with the physical and mental scars of war and not talk about it with his dad over a beer is insane.

Being able to drink for 3 years now, I say no way. Kids that are 18 aren't responsible enough to make it to work or class on time... I doubt they could handle something much for delicate and volatile like alcohol.

No, young people, I'm not calling you immature or stupid, or saying I know more... I'm just pointing out that in my experience people should have to wait longer to have such a privelege. And maybe even attend a "Don't be a dumbass with alcohol" class when they turn the legal drinking age.

In Alabama they are trying to raise the drinking age to 28. The state government really wants to get alcohol out of the high schools.

isn't half the fun of drinking at a younger age being because it's bad - or illegal? The thrill of it all, and the enjoyment you get from wiping up the toilet in the morning because you couldn't hold your liquor? the good old days.

If they lower the drinking age to 18, then they better raise the driving age to 21.

I dont really think there should be a specific age where the government says its ok to drink... but since that would never happen I would have to say 18 is good. And I suggest raising the driving age! I think it takes way more responsibility to drive an automobile than it does to have a drink. Of course, there are plenty of issues involving the combination of alcohol and other activities, and I believe those that could possibly endanger other people (ex drinking and driving) should be restricted as they always have been. But really, who the hell should care if I sit out in my backyard and have a drink (only 19 years old here)? Same thing goes for smoking a joint or whatever. The government is there to protect me from other people and other people from me, NOT to tell ME what I can and cant do to MYself. Not to mention the laws are totally ineffective. At no point in ANY of my teenage years have I been unable to acquire any illegal substance, and now that I'm up in college, I may as well be 21. Okay enough ranting... later on!

If that is true, I am glad.

Let me follow the logic here: 18 is old enough to participate in the decision about whom shall lead the armed forces of the US, 18 is old enough to join the armed forces and die for the US, 18 is old enough to vote for the folks that will pass laws, 18 is not old enough to consume a beer or cocktail in the US. Absolute dumbest idea I ever heard but frankly I do not waste time writing to politicians about it because we went through all this before when I was 18. Anytime MADD has the nerve to call my house the caller gets an earful regarding this though.

I hope you're prepared to watch alcohol-related deaths (both through poisoning and drunken driving) increase about 15-25% when young adults ages 18-20 are allowed to drink legally.

I agree with MushroomStamper, up to a point. In no way whatsoever should the Federal government get involved with or try to influence state and/or local policy regarding to alcohol and minors. Along with education, this issue is one of the most no-brainer state issues of all time, and for the Feds to try to influence the process (by way of bribes and threats, in threatening to withhold Federal highway funds or increase them, as case may be) is completely stupid.

If Colorado wants to make it 18, and Alabama 28, so be it. Our representative democracy system is perfectly capable of working out those details.

Just a note from somebody who has gone through this:

Out of 100 kids aged between 18 and 21, only 10 were stopped by this legal age BS. Just a thought.

Before all you kiddies start using the same old lame excuse, let's take another poll first:

In this day & age, how many of you REALLY think you will ever be drafted?

Barring a full-scale invasion of the United States by China, I am not personally too concerned about the prospect of being drafted. The ONLY time discussion of the draft ever even comes up anymore is when underage alcoholics are looking for a platform to stand on.

How about this...POLL #3:

How many people under the age of 21 do you know that actually drink responsibly?

This is not to say that everyone OVER 21 does so; however, I can't say that I have personally come across too many (if any) under 21. Bearing in mind, that when your goal is to "Get Drunk," I don't consider that being "responsible." ...or I suppose that everyone here is just a "Social Drinker."
