Okay, the story. It's not necessarily a good one, but it's a story all the same.
Back in the day I was trying to sign up for a free webpage account with Netscape. At the time I went by the name TalkieToaster, your lovable breakfast companion. Talkie's the name; toasting's the game. Yes, I liked Red Dwarf. Unfortunately, so did everyone else and their uncle; when I attempted to register the account TalkieToaster it told me it would be very happy to give me the account TalkieToaster23892, or something like that.
Like many young geeks -- geeklings, if you will -- I was a bit non-conformist. The idea of tacking a number on the end of my nick was the equivalent of photocopying someone else's face and taping it over mine as far as I was concerned. I realized I needed to create a new nickname and a new identity, lest I be a mindless conformist sheep. But I needed it in a hurry. So what did I do? I loaded up freedict.com and started putting words into the Japanese->English translation tool. You'll be happy to know that at least four people each have nicks that are variations on the Japanese words for death, life, sleep, distracted, god, fire, cat, computer and sushi. Finally I started pulling words out of the lyrics of the music in my Winamp playlist; in goes "misunderstanding", out comes "yukichigai". Unlike previous words, this one sounded vaguely like a name. I tried it on the netscape page and what do you know, not a single person had previously registered the nick "yukichigai". My non-conformist sensabilities had been satisified, and I now had a whopping 20 megs of space to do with as I pleased.
Later I added "Y|" in front of my name on certain IRC servers to indicate that I'm a switch. I found it looked interesting and unique, so I started using it elsewhere whenever I could.
